Tropes

  • Bad Boss: Red Death threatens to kill the Fiddler if she doesn't succeed in bringing her Hartley's gauntlets.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Despite being defeated, Fiddler still manages to get ahold of Hartley's gauntlets, with the help of Mercer. This apparently gives Red Death stability and control over her powers, and she swears to "bring justice" to Central City.
  • Beam-O-War: Hartley's and Fiddler's shockwaves clash during their first fight. The latter wins.
  • The Bus Came Back: Hartley Rathaway makes a comeback for the first time since Season 6.
  • Call-Back:
    • When Hartley mentions that he was attacked by the Fiddler, Barry first thinks he is talking about Izzy Bowen, from Season 4.
    • "Khione" was previously referenced in "All Doll'd Up" as a hidden message that Thomas Snow had made.
  • Canon Foreigner: Unlike Owen Mercer, who was also a Legacy Character to Digger Harkness from the comics, Andrea Wozzeck is a completely original character created for the show.
  • Character Death: As established here, when Caitlin entered the CRC to try and get Frost back, it instead merged her and Frost together. However, unlike when they were sharing the same body, this time, the process created a third, distinct being who calls herself Khione, with neither set of memories. This means that Caitlin Snow is dead.
  • The Empath: Khione seems very good at reading people, as she shows with Hartley.
  • Evil Redhead: Andrea Wozzeck, the new Fiddler, is a redhead.
  • Heroic Rematch: After improving the power of his gauntlets, and with a little help from Barry, Hartley defeats the Fiddler in their rematch.
  • It's All About Me: Mark only cares about bringing back Frost. To that end he first manipulates Khione into lying to the team and then threatens to take Hartley down in revenge after he destroys the CRC.
  • It's All My Fault: Barry naturally blames himself for Caitlin's death due to destroying her laboratory.
  • It's Personal: Mark vows to kill Hartley after the latter destroys the CRC.
  • Legacy Character: Just as Owen Mercer is this to Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang, Andrea Wozzeck is this to Izzy Bowen/The Fiddler.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Khione was the Greek goddess of ice and snow.
    • Fiddler's civilian name, Andrea Wozzeck, might be a reference to the titular madman from the German opera Wozzeck.
  • Nature Lover: Khione mentions that she loves rain, and all of nature.
  • No Social Skills: Khione is very blunt and open, and she also has no real sense of personal space. The team does find her charming in spite of it though.
  • Not Quite Dead: The Fiddler apparently kills Hartley's crew, but Barry shows him that she just trapped them in a vibrational phase.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Barry tells Mark that sometimes, for the ones they love, people do the wrong thing for the right reasons. Just like he often did.
  • Parting-Words Regret: Barry laments that his last words to Caitlin before her apparent death were “I’m sorry”, not for the words themselves, but the fact he didn’t mean them.
  • Sadistic Choice: The team is faced with possibly having to choose between only Caitlin or Frost being able to come back. The choice gets taken out of their hands though, when Khione decides to not go into the CRC at all.
  • Sucks at Dancing: Well, Iris certainly seems to think so, in regards to Barry.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Hartley acts pretty hostile to the team for most of the first half, even after they help him when he is injured. It is explained by him being worried sick about Roderick though (and, well, it is Hartley, after all).
  • Wham Line: Mark telling the team that Caitlin is dead.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • The team is understandibly furious with Mark after it is revealed that he tried to manipulate them into also bringing Frost back.
    • Later, Mark gets enraged at Khione for refusing to go back into the CRC, and at Hartley for destroying it afterward.
