Recap / The Flash 2014 S 7 E 15 Enemy At The Gates

Go To

Barry sees a vision of his future daughter Nora, making him believe Iris is pregnant. While he runs his own pregnancy test, multiple Godspeeds start appearing in order to hunt down Flash and steal his speed again. While Barry and Chester deal with that, Caitlin performs surgery to remove the chips Black Hole put into Ultraviolet, Frost continues to deal with Chillblaine, and Joe and Kramer continue the search for Kramer's brother.

Tropes:

  • Achilles' Heel: Chester loudly transmits the "modem-speak" of the Godspeeds through speakers to throw them off their balance.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Mark claims his not being a good guy is why Frost is attracted to him.
  • Almost Kiss: Between Frost and Mark at the end, before Mark's distraction goes off and he runs while her back is turned.
  • Artistic License – Medicine: Oh, so much with Caitlin's surgery on Ultraviolet. The operating room isn't sterile, nobody is wearing a mask or any kind of facial covering, and Caitlin is performing the surgery all alone without any kind of assistants.
  • Bad Liar: Barry is very bad in his attempts at covering up Iris's possible pregnancy, which is why Cecile and Chester eventually figure it out.
  • Bait the Dog: Turns out that Mark's attempts at wooing Frost were only meant as a distraction to escape.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Frost, when Mark gets cornered and injured by a bunch of thugs.
  • Bring It: Even when cornered and outnumbered, Barry defiantly shouts at the Godspeeds, which draws the ones who are about to kill his friends away towards him.
  • Brutal Honesty: Mark makes it clear that he will never be a hero.
  • The Bus Came Back: Jessica Parker Kennedy as Nora West-Allen in Barry's dream, showing up for the first time since being erased from existence in the Season 5 finale.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Chester mentions how Captain Cold became a good guy when talking about Chillblaine's possible redemption.
    • Chillblaine brings back up Frost's old "Killer Frost" moniker.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Joe and Kramer's car exploding after coming close to Adam Creyke's possible whereabouts.
  • Dramatic Unmask: Esperanza takes off her mask for the very first time during her operation.
  • Enemy Civil War: As Barry is being attacked by an army of Godspeed clones, an entirely different army of Godspeed clones shows up to kill the ones attacking him.
  • Energy Absorption: How the Godspeeds eventually break through the barrier. They also manage to steal a bit of Barry's speed.
  • Godzilla Threshold: With the Godspeeds breaching the force field, Frost gives Mark his gauntlets back.
  • Hope Spot: At the beginning of the episode, Barry really believed that Iris is finally pregnant. In the end, to his massive disappointment, the tests are negative.
  • I Call It "Vera": Mark calls his gauntlets "Derek and Nancy".
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Cecile and Chester learn that Barry and Iris are trying to conceive.
    • While he doesn't learn the details yet, Chester also deduces that Barry must've met his future daughter already.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: The thugs attacking Mark wisely retreat once Frost shows up.
  • Lured into a Trap: The Godspeeds' various attacks on the city are meant to draw Barry out. Once Barry races to one Godspeed's location, he sends a signal that summoned the rest of the clones.
  • Mundane Utility: Cecile uses her powers to project her feelings of peace into Esperanza, stabilizing her during the operation.
  • Mythology Gag: Chester asks if Barry has a Flashmobile, which he has had at various times in the comics.
  • Noodle Incident: Mark has had run-ins with all medical facilities (legal and illegal) in the area, which is why he isn't welcome there.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Esperanza, which is why she initially rejects the operation (that and she doesn't trust Caitlin). But as Allegra points out, she should rather enjoy her life first.
  • Oh, Crap!: Chester says this when he sees one of the Godspeed clones.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Mark towards Frost (and the rest of the team), pointing out that they don't get to sit in their Ivory Tower and decide who is good and who is bad. Though later, he himself admits that he is not a good guy.
  • The Reveal: All the Godspeeds aren't actually on the same side, and that at least two different factions are enemies.
  • Revenge Is Not Justice: While Joe has agreed to help Kramer hunt down Adam, he makes it clear that they should bring him to justice, and if Kramer tries to get revenge instead, she's on her own.
  • Scotty Time: Chester says he can upload a signal to disrupt the Godspeeds in five minutes. Barry tells him to make it four.
  • Serial Escalation: While the heroes have certainly faced no shortage of evil speedsters before, this is the first time they've faced a whole army of them at one time.
  • Some Kind Of Forcefield: S.T.A.R. Labs has one as a defense mechanism, which the Godspeeds take some time to breach through.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: After learning that Chillblaine is a Persona Non Grata at every doctor in the city both illegal and legal, Frost decides to take him to a vet. Turns out he already went there for treatment once and was similarly banned.
  • Swiss-Cheese Security:
    • Played with, for once, in the case of STAR Labs. While there is a fairly effective anti-speedster force field which takes half a dozen Godspeeds to destroy, the Time Vault (supposedly made by Cisco into a panic room) doesn't even resist a single one.
    • Not played with, but the only regular door in the place that has a working lock is apparently the bar.
  • This Cannot Be!: Barry is left devastated when the pregnancy test is negative.
  • Understatement: Barry calls Iris when the Godspeeds are about to breach the force field, saying that everything "turned into a hell of a day at the office".
  • Villainous Rescue: A second batch of Godspeeds saves Barry from the first one.
