Recap / The Facts Of Life Breaking Point

Go To

A very popular well-to do student at school commits suicide, and Mrs. G and the girls navigate the tragedy in different ways.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Brutal Honesty: Possibly stemming from the fact that a friend of hers committed suicide in the past, Jo is very blunt about the truth of the situation, even stating that Cynthia is dead and never coming back.

  • Friendship Trinket: Cynthia gifts Tootie a necklace as thanks for being so kind to her. When cleaning up Cynthia's room shortly after her death, she tries to give it back out of grief and anger. But a talk with Mrs. Garrett and the girls convinces her to keep it.

  • Heroic BSoD: Blair has one following her loss to Cynthia over the Student Council President position. She snaps out of it once Cynthia commits suicide, realizing there are more important things to worry about.

  • Just a Kid: When Tootie walks in on the final scene, Jo tries to get her to leave, as she feels that she's too young for this sort of situation, but Tootie barks back that she has a right to be there since she found Cynthia in the first place.

  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: Tootie sorrowfully complains that Cynthia didn't say goodbye, but Mrs. Garrett tells her that the necklace she gave her was most likely her way of saying goodbye.

  • Nice Girl: Cynthia is very sweet to everybody, especially to Tootie. This makes her suicide all the more tragic.

  • Sore Loser: Blair is not happy that she lost the election and makes rude comments about Cynthia afterwards. Jo calls her out on it.

  • Very Special Episode: About Suicide, and easily the series most serious episode ever, not only does Tootie discover the body, but the girls are left very saddened by Cynthia's death. Even the laugh track is absent at the end.
