Season 1, Episode 10:

Leviathan Wakes

In the wake of the protomolecule's release, everyone struggles to get off Eros.

Tropes:

  • After Action Patch Up: Holden and Naomi share a moment at the end of the episode.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: On his joining the police, Miller says it was a choice of being an ass or a boot. Holden shoots back: "Which one are you now?"
  • Asshole Victim: Miller shooting Kothari, who tried to kill Havelock a few episodes back.
  • The Assimilator: The final scene shows Kenzo being seized by Combat Tentacles and dragged into the protomolecule, now taking up a large part of the station.
  • Bait-and-Switch Gunshot: Amos has been growing distant from Naomi, so it looks like he's going to side with him when Sematimba pulls a gun on her. He walks off to the side, then shoots Sematimba In the Back, splattering Naomi with his blood.
  • Best Served Cold: Miller finally gets his payback for Kothari's attack on Havelock, as noted below.
  • Blood from the Mouth / Incurable Cough of Death: Holden and Miller are coughing blood due to radiation poisoning.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Miller discovers that Kothari (who impaled Havelock several episodes ago) is one of the Ceres gang members who hired on with CPM. He creates a situation where he can do this.
  • Connected All Along: Julie Mao's case, the bioweapon, the Anubis, and the disappearance of gangs on Ceres were all leading up to the radiation experiment on Eros.
  • Cutting the Knot: Holden doesn't trust Kenzo to hack the Rocinante out of lockdown, and Amos shoots Sematimba before he can use his CPM override. Instead, Alex just breaks free of the docking clamps by ditching the superfluous gas tanks they were ferrying as a disguise, which the clamps were locked on to instead of the main body of the ship.
  • Dead Person Conversation: Julie starts talking to Miller in the pachinko parlor.
  • Death of a Child: Implied; Naomi finds a little girl and tries to take her on board their ship, but her parents turn up and insist on taking refuge in the hospital instead.
  • Death Seeker: Holden has to stop Miller taking on five CPM goons when they're trapped in the pachinko parlour, without even trying to see if there's another way out.
  • Dressing as the Enemy: Holden and Miller shoot two CPM members and take their uniforms.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: Miller has this reaction to Holden.
"Half the system thinks you're some kind of outlaw hero, but you're really kind of clueless, aren't you?"
  • Giving Them the Strip: Done with a spaceship instead of a coat!
  • It Can Think: The floating lights of the protomolecule swarm around Kenzo and shape themselves into an imitation of his form.
  • Never Suicide: This was strongly hinted at in the previous episode, but in this one, Avasarala flat-out says that Frank was murdered to cover up what he discovered about the stealth ships.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Avasarala plans to play the fool until she figures out the truth behind the frame-up on Fred Johnson.
  • Powder Keg Crowd: Type 1. The CPM goons and the mercenaries were already at a standoff, but Miller deliberately plays the rabble-rouser to start the shooting, partly because he and Holden need to get through, and partly because one of the goons in the crowd is the one who nearly killed his partner and Miller needs a way to kill him without pissing everyone else off.
  • The Reveal:
    • Naomi does have ties to the OPA, as the Martian interrogator hinted (at least, enough to know how they smuggle things around). Exactly what her role is with them remains unclear... for now.
    • Errinwright is working with Jules-Pierre Mao.
  • Secret Passage: Naomi uses an OPA map to take them through some disused tunnels to the docks but ends up at a dead end. This confuses her until they kick down the wall and find it's covering an air shaft that leads straight to their destination.
  • Shoot the Dog: Amos shoots Sematimba when he pulls a gun on Naomi to get the Rocinante crew to take off without Holden and Miller. It's also implied that Sematimba killed a Zombie Infectee earlier.
  • What Measure Is a Mook?: Averted; Holden comes close to a Heroic BSoD after killing a CPM goon.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Implied when the CPM goons are told where to board the evac spacecraft, since it's waiting for them on the opposite side of station from their current location. Unsurprisingly they're not happy about this, given that the station is already swarming with the infected.
  • You Wouldn't Shoot Me: Kenzo tells Holden he's not a killer, not knowing that Holden has just killed someone,
