Tropes present in this episode:

  • And I'm the Queen of Sheba: When Rosco meets Cale, he doens't believe it. "If you're Cale Yarborough I'm the tooth fairy." Later Boss (offscreen) says that he's Goldilocks.
  • Cool Car: Notably averted. Cale Yarborough drives into Hazzard in an unassuming station wagon.
  • Dedication: At the end of the episode Cale dedicates a NASCAR race he has just won to Robby.
  • Death by Despair: Robby is said to have "lost the will to live," but he perks up upon hearing that Bo and Luke are bringing a personally autographed picture of Cale Yarborough to him from town.
  • Dramatic Irony: When Bo and Luke go to pick up the picture it hasn't come in the mail yet. They go off to see Robby, Bo saying "We should look on the bright side. We didn't tell Robby about that picture coming." But Daisy already told Robby about it. We know that, Bo doesn't. Rendered moot a few scenes later when Bo and Luke discover that Cale has decided to come to Hazzard personally to visit Robby.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: This is one of the rare episodes where someone else is tuned in to the same Hollywood CB channel as someone else.
    • While Boss Hogg is sitting in Rosco's car "thinking" of where the Dukes might be, he hears them on the radio where they say that they're in the Hazzard impound yard. Then Boss tells Rosco he has "figured out" that the Dukes are in the impound yard, claiming he has ESP.
    • Later Boss radios the two bad guys letting them know that the Dukes may be headed in their direction. Cale Yarborough, driving Uncle Jesse's pickup truck, hears them talking.
  • Guest Star: See episode title for the name of a famous NASCAR racer who was starring in his second Dukes episode.
  • Hating on Monday: At the very top of the episode Waylon says this is "the story of the worst Monday that ever hit Hazzard."
  • Heartwarming Orphan: The latest in a seemingly endless parade of orphans, this one is dying at the local hospital of a rare illness.
  • I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: Robby, the orphan in the hospital, is described as "an eleven year old orphan the Dukes always thought of as kind of a kid brother" even though we've never seen him on the show before.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Upon Rosco plowing into an oil derrick:
Bo: Oil's well that ends well.
Luke: You see what I got to put up with Cale?
  • Littlest Cancer Patient: Orphan Robby who is in the hospital for an unspecified surgery.
  • Mr. Exposition: Elmo and Eddie, who keep telling each other things they already know, are played by Dennis Hoskins and Al White who have both been in several episodes previously.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: During the course of two chases Rosco manages to destroy two oil derricks on the same plot of land.
  • Serious Business: According to Rosco, impersonating Cale Yarborough is almost as bad as robbing a bank - which he also thinks that he did.
  • Sequel Episode: Of sorts, to season 2's "The Dukes Meet Cale Yarborough."
  • Stock Footage: At the end of the episode the Dukes and Robby watch a NASCAR race that Cale is in and wins. The footage is of an actual NASCAR race.
