Recap / The Dreamstone S 04 E 03 The Stowaways

Go To

Original Air Date (UK): Jan 17, 1995

During preparations for a mission, a couple of Wottles accidentally stowaway in Blob's Whirleyped. Rufus and Amberley sneak around Viltheed to rescue the two Wottles then hitch a ride on the Whirleyped to return home.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: This ends up one of the Noops' most convoluted victories, having to put a much greater amount of stealth and trickery into escaping and stopping the Urpneys. Ironically Blob's men don't even notice they're there, let alone that they accidentally kidnapped the Wottles and caused a chain reaction that led to their key enemies getting imprisoned in Viltheed.
  • Artificial Outdoors Display: The Urpney paint guns are a rather crude means of this, shooting black paint onto the tower windows so the Dream Maker will think it's nighttime. The plan doesn't even get that far.
  • Characterisation Marches On: The usually gung-ho Wildit conducts what looks like a bit of Armchair Military with the Noops this episode, to their dismay, compared to most earlier episodes where Wildit is The Ace and the Noops are eager but mostly incompetent Tagalong Kids.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Reconstructed. While the Urpneys' scheme was still pretty useless in this episode, their accidental abduction of the Wottles leaves the Noops having perform a rather elaborate stealth mission to get them out of Viltheed.
  • Got Volunteered: Rufus and Amberley as usual are enlisted to go to Viltheed to rescue the Wottles while the elders stay behind. They seem slightly more suspicious of this strategy than usual however.
  • Hidden Depths: While brief, this episode implies Rufus and Amberley are aware they do most of the heroes' grunt work, and much like Frizz and Nug, aren't 100% happy with their job either.
  • Hypochondriac: Frizz, after being splatted with Urpney paint, starts to dwell over the potential side effects.
  • Little Stowaway: As the title implies, first the Wottles do this by accident, hiding in the Whirliped when the Urpneys take off in it. Later they and the Noops have to do this again to get back to the Land of Dreams.
  • Lovable Coward:
    • The Wottles, Hat and Egg, are left rather hopeless when the Urpneys "kidnap" them, while the others go into a panic when they disappear. The former do help as the Noops get them out of Viltheed however.
    • Frizz is also being his usual hypochondriac self.
  • Sequel Episode: To "Wottles".
  • Sympathetic P.O.V.: The episode starts mostly from the Urpneys' point of view, then switches primarily to the heroes. Like several other Season Four episodes, Rufus and Amberley are also portrayed as more put upon than before, having a harder time because of the buffoonery of Blob's men, with even some subtle ribs to how often they are made to deal with the Urpneys' crap by the other heroes.
