Recap / The Dreamstone S 02 E 01 The Nightmare Stone

Go To

Original Air Date (UK): Jan 22, 1992

Zordrak returns with a counterpart of The Dreamstone, The Nightmare Stone. Rufus and Amberley head Viltheed to steal it for The Dream Maker, who sends it into space from where it came from.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: After failing to get the Nightmare Stone and ending up thrown in a jail, Rufus accidentally knocks out Urpgor as he tries to open their cell, with the Nightmare Stone he was holding dropped right before Rufus.
  • Broken Pedestal: His unpleasant trip with his hovering throne last episode has clearly Zordrak very bitter with Urpgor and his inventions, wasting no time firing him when the Nightmare Stone proves capable of doing his job. Urpgor's betrayal leaves Zordrak dependent on him once again, though he remains far more antipathetic towards his schemes compared to Season One.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Implied with the battle against the Noops and Urpneys. As his army lies dazed, Blob thinks they have won, not knowing the enemy only retreated because the stone was retrieved.
  • Despite the Plan: The Noops' diversion is caught out quickly and they are captured. They still escape with the Nightmare Stone placed (literally) before them thanks to Urpgor's bumbling.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Urpgor, after being fired by Zordrak, wastes no time sabotaging his new plan to make himself relevant again.
  • Evil Counterpart: The Nightmare Stone.
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • Rufus and Amberley fail to notice Urpgor's vehicle or any of the Urpneys floating away back to Viltheed.
    • As something of Book Ends, Sgt Blob fails to notice the heroes escaping on the same vehicle during the climax.
  • Getting Smilies Painted on Your Soul: Zordrak's army as they were at the end of the previous episode. Urpgor's invention snaps them out of it.
  • Giving the Sword to a Noob: The Dream Maker charges Rufus and Amberley with the protective gloves and compass to collect the Nightmare Stone. They get caught and Rufus loses the gloves, ultimately getting the stone through fortunate coincidences.
  • Happy Ending Override: Played straight for the heroes, with Zordrak returning and the war recommencing after peace seemingly prevailing in "Megattack". Reconstructed for the Urpneys however, who are unbrainwashed but back under Zordrak's rule.
  • Heel–Face Brainwashing: The Urpneys and Argorribles are still under the heroes' magic at the start of the episode, before Urpgor, Blob and his men transport them back to Viltheed and break them out of it.
  • The Hunter Becomes the Hunted: The Noops are left sneaking into Viltheed to steal the Nightmare Stone from the Urpneys this time round.
  • Invincible Incompetent: Rufus and Amberley, largely as a result of Urpgor's scheming, manage to snag the Nightmare Stone with a fraction of the hardship and effort Blob and his goons go through failing to get the Dreamstone.
  • Macguffin Delivery Service: An inadvertant case, after Urpgor steals the Nightmare Stone, he unwittingly opens the Noops' cell, leading Rufus to accidentally knock him out and leave the stone literally next to his lap to take. Not that this bothered Urpgor much, since he wanted the stone rid of in the first place.
  • Protagonist-Centered Morality: The rather saccharine opening with the heroes celebrating with the brainwashed villains is portrayed as nothing short of cheerful and righteous. Blob and his men retrieving them and breaking them free from the spell is conveyed in a dark and horrifying light by the heroes and narrative. Keeping in mind we've already had an episode where the villains brainwash a hero.
  • Team Rocket Wins: Though it's never confirmed, the Argorribles are heavily implied to spread nightmares again thanks to being powered by the Nightmare Stone.
  • We Have Become Complacent: After Zordrak is defeated, the Dream Maker lampshades they are at risk of letting their guard down. The others ignore this, and while their back is turned, all the Urpneys return to Viltheed and Zordrak remerges with the Nightmare Stone, leading to another bad night's sleep.
  • We Need a Diversion: The Noop civilians attack Viltheed to distract the Urpney army while Rufus and Amberley sneak in to steal the Nightmare Stone. Zordrak doesn't fall for it however and commands Frizz and Nug to capture them in time.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Played with. Zordrak announces he is no longer in need of Urpgor's inventions now he has the Nightmare Stone, but instead has him cast out of Viltheed.
