Chapter 58: Making Bonds and Breaking Bonds

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Appeal to Force: Being a Monstrous Nightmare, even Spitelout isn't stubborn enough to argue with Snotlout when Hookfang has his back.
  • Cliffhanger: The chapter ends with Stoick whipping out his axe with intent on killing Mariposa, making contact with flesh and drawing blood.
  • Diabolus ex Machina: Stoick finally sees Hiccup's perspective on dragons, they spend an evening just talking, he realizes and accepts that Hiccup won't stay on Berk... and then he completely loses it and tries killing Mirabel's dragon.
  • Heel–Face Turn:
    • Snotlout defends Hiccup from his father, and apologizes to him for being a bully all his life (despite the fact that this apology seems to cause him physical pain).
    • While Stoick is more of an Anti-Villain, he begins trying to see from Hiccup's perspective instead of just assuming he knows what's best for him. In this chapter, he finally begins to bond with Hiccup.
  • Internal Reveal: Stoick officially learns the story of Hiccup's friendship with Toothless, how he's become an honorary Madrigal, and about the adventures he's had since his crash in the Encanto.
  • The Joy of First Flight: While Mirabel has flown on Toothless multiple times, her first real flight with Mariposa has shades of this.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: While Snotlout usually follows his dad's word, here he refuses to side with his dad on Hiccup's plan, having bonded with Hookfang long enough not to want to lose him.
    Ruffnut: Snotlout... just defended Hiccup...
Tuffnut: What is this world coming to!?
  • Mood Whiplash: The entire chapter is relatively light-hearted, with a majority of it being dedicated to dragon-training and Stoick rebuilding his bond with Hiccup. This all ends when Stoick sees Mariposa and tries to kill her.
  • Sarcasm-Blind:
Stoick: ...there's a difference between acknowledging that perhaps some dragons aren't mindless beasts, and taking them out for walks.
Fishlegs: Actually, most dragons prefer going out for flights! It stimulates their wing muscles, activates several neurons in their brains that respond to being in the air, and it serves to...
  • Slapstick: Meatlug and Isabela's Snaptrapper end up getting in a fight that devolves into Disaster Dominoes with the rest of the Dragon Trainers. Stoick finds the whole thing rather humorous.
  • Soapbox Sadie: Spitelout literally stands on a box preaching against Hiccup's new way of doing things. Thankfully, his following is small and ineffectual. Even Snotlout calls him out for how ridiculous he's being.
