Chapter 45: By the Hook
Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:
- Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: After finding out that Mirabel is Hiccup's girlfriend, Gobber fills this role when he tells her an embarrassing story of Hiccup's from when he was a toddler. He also shouts as he's leaving that he hopes he's invited to Hiccup and Mirabel's wedding.
- Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: A trio of men try keeping Gobber out of the Encanto because the Vikings had tried to kidnap Hiccup, attacked the Madrigals and his feet smell.
- Gasshole: Gobber would offer to demonstrate to Mirabel why he's called "the Belch", but won't for Dolores' sake.Hiccup: He's not kidding. Dolores would have a heart attack.
- Curse Cut Short: Gobber tells Stoick that he'll never be able to reconnect with Hiccup unless he pulls his head out of his—-Stoick interrupts him by yelling and punching down a tree.
- I Have Your Wife: The chapter ends with Astrid forming a plan to kidnap Mirabel as incentive for Hiccup to come back.
- Internal Reveal: Gobber not only learns about Hiccup's life in the Encanto, but that Hiccup and Mirabel are a couple.
- I Want Him To Be Happy: Gobber is willing to let Hiccup stay in the Encanto, as he can tell that the boy has a happier life there than Berk could ever give him. However, he'll miss Hiccup, and knows that Stoick won't be so easily convinced to leave.
- Running Gag: Once again, someone laughs over how spectacularly bad names on Berk are. Felix remarks that, after hearing names like Gobber, Snotlout, and others, Hiccup's name is the least horrible one they've heard.
- The Only One I Trust: Hiccup clearly feels this for Gobber, since the Viking not only helped raise him, but defended him and unconditionally loved him. Gobber proves himself worthy of said trust when he sees how happy Hiccup is in the Encanto, and gives him his permission to stay. By the end of the chapter, Mirabel comes to view Gobber as the only "good" Berkian.
- This Is Gonna Suck: Gobber knows that Stoick won't be happy with him for giving Hiccup permission to stay in the Encanto, and isn't looking forward to telling him.
