Chapter 43: Fighting over a Fishbone (Custody Battle of the Century)

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Berserk Button: Snotlout's finger starts to hover over it when he messes with Hiccup's ruana, then pushes it when he insults Mirabel, earning him a punch to the face.
  • Big "NO!": When Stoick admits that he intends to take Hiccup from his foster family and kill Toothless, Hiccup turns away from him. When Stoick tries to call him back, Hiccup snaps and screams this at his former father. It's powerful enough that Stoick shivers.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Mirabel tells the Vikings "vete a la mierda" ("fuck off"), something Tuffnut translates for her.
Gobber: W-Where'd a dainty lass like that get such a vocabulary?
    Felix: Guilty!
  • Brain Bleach: When the Madrigals are in combat with Stoick's party, a heavily armed Tuffnut gangs up on Bruno. At that moment, Bruno has a vision, telling him that his sister will get together with Fishlegs. Tuffnut is so horrified by this revelation that he faints.
Bruno: H-He couldn't handle the truth!
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Mirabel delivers an epic one. When Stoick reveals that he is Hiccup's father, she snaps and lets him have it. She calls him out for everything he's done to hurt Hiccup, tells him to leave, and then delivers a Precision F-Strike that shocks her Abuela (although Camilo finds it hilarious).
  • Cloudcuckoolander: When Tuffnut sees an identical version of him (Camilo), he thinks he's "performed mitosis", something he's apparently hoping would happen for a while.
  • Declaration of Protection: The Madrigals for Hiccup, declaring that he's part of the family, and that no one messes with their family. The speech is so powerful that Hiccup wakes up long enough to thank them.
  • Decoy Damsel: When Stoick's party think they've won, they walk off with Camilo disguised as an unconscious Hiccup while Mirabel sneaks away with the real Hiccup to heal him.
  • Divide and Conquer: Hiccup manages to disarm the twins by convincing Ruffnut that Tuffnut called her fat, causing the two of them to fight.
  • Evil Is Petty: Hiccup is under the belief that his old-town bullies had tracked him down just to torment him further.
  • Frame-Up: Snotlout tries portraying Hiccup as a dangerous war-criminal so that the Madrigals would give him up, unaware of just how close they are to him.
  • God Guise: When they see Camilo in action, the twins immediately mistake him for Loki, the shape-shifting Norse God of Mischief.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his idiotic moments, Tuffnut has a surprising knack for languages, to the extent that he's the only one able to translate Mirabel's insult for the rest of the Berkians.
  • Inheritance Murder: Since Stoick wants Hiccup back, Snotlout intends on "eliminating" Hiccup so that he would become Stoick's heir.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Ruffnut thinks she's innocent of assaulting Mirabel with a knife because it was a dagger she attacked her with instead of a knife.
  • The Kindnapper: While the Viking teens are all there for their own reasons, Stoick and Gobber want to bring Hiccup back to Berk because they honestly believe that it's in his best interest. The fact that he's started a new, happy life with his magical Colombian foster family catches them completely off guard.
  • Mood Whiplash: Stoick tries giving a sincere apology to Hiccup that almost works... and then proclaims that they can "get you away from these witches" and kill Toothless together before leaving for Berk. It was such a poor choice of words, Gobber Facepalms. Hiccup decides then and there that he never wants to go back to Berk.
  • Papa Wolf: When Stoick tries scaring the Madrigals into giving up Hiccup, Agustin is the only one who doesn't flinch. He gets right up in Stoick's face and tells him that he will not lay one finger on his boy.
  • Pass the Popcorn: When Snotlout is pummeling Hiccup, Tuffnut is stated as wishing he had some popcorn.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: When Hiccup gets serious about him touching his ruana, Snotlout sarcastically asks if his girlfriend made it for him. He immediately realizes that this is the case from the look on Hiccup's face.
  • Sexual Euphemism: When Bruno has his vision when confronted by Tuffnut, he asks him if he wants to know "what [his] sister's gonna be doing in a couple years". He then points to Fishlegs.
  • Stop Hitting Yourself: Isabela makes Snotlout do this to himself with her vines.
  • Too Dumb to Live: When Camilo takes Snotlout's form, the real Snotlout is so enamoured with how "beautiful" he is that he freely gives him his weapon before Camilo knocks him out with it.
  • Wham Line: Agustin inadvertently lets the Vikings know just why the Madrigals are protecting Hiccup:
"You won't lay a finger on my boy!"
  • Unskilled, but Strong: When the Madrigals do battle with Stoick's party, they are able to overwhelm them with their various gifts. Unfortunately, none of the Madrigals are fighters and are one-trick ponies when it comes to using their abilities defensively, while the Vikings are all stronger and have more fighting experience, so all they have to do is tough it out until the Madrigals exhaust themselves.
