Chapter 10: Cracking Up

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Call-Back: The first time Hiccup was near Casita, he was being held captive and interrogated, with the house helping. Even though the whole thing was cleared up as a misunderstanding and Casita now likes Hiccup, he's still terrified to go near the building.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: It takes Antonio "taming" Toothless with his new gift for the village to relax around him, not believing that he was tame to begin with.
Oh, great. He puts in all this time to train a dragon, and now he doesn't even get credit for it? Of course this happened to him. Even when he got a win, he couldn't get a win.
  • Everything Has Rhythm: Hiccup catches Ignacio dancing with a broom as practice for the party later.
  • Improperly Paranoid: Hiccup is naturally apprehensive to attend the party knowing that Casita Madrigal is alive.
Everyone spoke as if the house was the kindest, gentlest thing. But Hiccup knew better. He remembered the moving floors, delivering him straight to his prison. The doors locking on their own, preventing his escape. The windows flashing light into his eyes, just to screw with him. He'd had a few nightmares about being trapped in that thing.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Even with Hiccup co-oberating her story, Alma still passes her claims of the house falling apart as her seeing things.
  • Jerkass at Your Discretion: When Hiccup bumps into Isabela, he is genuinely worried considering how badly their first encounter went. Instead she acts sweet and unassuming.
Ignacio: Putting the moves on Isabela, eh kid?
Hiccup: Gods no! I'm pretty sure she hates me! I have no idea why she was being so nice to me, probably to lull me into a false sense of security...
  • Mistaken for Flirting: Ignacio thinks Hiccup and Isabela's interaction was him "putting the moves" on her. While Isabela is highly desirable, Hiccup has no interest in her.
She's engaged? Some poor guy was gonna marry her?
May the Gods have mercy on his soul.
  • Mythology Gag: The way Mirabel describes her relationship with Alma is the same as how Hiccup described his relationship with his father in How to Train Your Dragon.
Mirabel: Abuela looks at me like with this disappointed scowl, like someone skimped on the meat in her sandwich!
