This episode has examples of

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: If you think Jay and Margo's parents are this, say hello to Johnny's clean-cut, dorky parents. Jay points out that no one can be cool in front of their parents, with a cutaway showing this to be true of even Sean Connery.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: In the hedge maze.
Pope John Paul II: Don King, how do you get out of this maze?
Don King: If I knew, I'd be there!
  • Big Brother Instinct: Jay sizes Johnny up to make sure he'll treat Margo right. After Johnny is a proven louse, Jay orchestrates driving him from his mansion by bringing Johnny's parents there.
  • Full Moon Silhouette: As to be expected, D.T.: The Drunken Terrestrial features this, except the plastered D.T. immediately falls out of the basket.
  • Hedge Maze: According to Eleanor, Pope John Paul II has been lost in their hedge maze for a week and (due to wanting to avoid unwanted publicity) no one has told the media a thing about it. A cutaway shows that Don King is also lost in the maze.
  • Hidden Depths: Shackleford knows a lot about Johnny Wrath and his band. He's also previously worked for an assortment of music legends, including the Beatles.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: Doris says she was the Phlegm Fatale Cigarettes spokeswoman back in the '50s.
Duke: What happened to your career?
Doris: I got knocked up by the Fruit of the Loom banana.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Jay notes his sponsor Bloat Beer would agree with him about the dangers of alcoholism, only for a spokeswoman in a beer bottle costume to do a jingle about drinking at any time of day. Later, Jay praises a movie for an anti-smoking message and is certain Phlegm Fatale Cigarettes would agree, only for his show to be interviewed by an old pro-smoking ad.
  • Political Overcorrectness: Parodied with On His or Her Majesty's Secret Service. James Bond successfully lobbies for SPECTRE to admit the blind, gays, and little people, but his attempts at getting anywhere with his latest Bond girl fail miserably.
  • Recognition Failure: At the concert, Jay is mistaken for Meat Loaf.
  • Sand Worm: At (Nightmare on) Elm Street Preschool, Alice and Penny are confronted by the Worm from Hell, who's said to not be so bad once you get to know him.
  • Something We Forgot: Parodied. With Margo happy and Penny in preschool, Jay says he wrapped up all the loose ends. The final scene then cuts to Pope John Paul II and Don King still lost in the Shermans' hedge maze.
  • Start My Own: "Duke Phillips' Pre-Cchool: Built on a Dare"
  • You Are Fat: At the concert, Johnny invites Jay and Margo onto the stage, but Jay's weight makes climbing up from his seat difficult, even with the help of others. They ultimately have to use a crane to get him on stage.
  • Younger and Hipper: Parodied with Star Trek: Generation X starring Christian Slater and Keanu Reeves.
