"The Wedding Gift" is the fifth episode of season 1 of The Chosen.
Nicodemus interrogates John the Baptizer while Jesus and his students make their way to a wedding celebration in Cana. When the wine runs low, Mary asks her son to intervene on behalf of the bridegroom's family.
This episode provides examples of:
- Actually Pretty Funny: After teasing Andrew about his (lack of) dancing ability, Jesus jokes that there are things even he can't fix
- Adaptation Origin Connection: Thomas is a caterer at the wedding at Cana, where Jesus recruits him.
- Dramatic Irony: Simon states to Jesus that he will go to the ends of the earth with him. Later on, he ends up denying the fact that he knows Jesus three times.
- Flashback: The opening scene shows Mother Mary and Joseph searching for Jesus in Jerusalem when he was 12.
- Meaningful Echo: In the opening scene, twelve-year-old Jesus asks Mother Mary, "If not now, when?" Later, at the wedding, when he tells Mother Mary that his time has not yet come, she asks him the same question.
- Point of No Return: While Jesus performs the miracle of turning water to wine, Thaddeus describes the difference between being a smith and being a stonecutter in a voiceover. This serves as a metaphor for the upcoming change in Jesus' ministry that this miracle will cause.Thaddeus: Once you make that first cut into the stone, it can't be undone.
- Sucks at Dancing: Simon says that Andrew has four left feet.Simon: When he tries to dance, he looks like a donkey walking on hot coals.
