Recap / The Casagrandes S 2 E 2 Fails From The Crypt Bad Cluck

Go To

Fails from the Crypt: The kids try to break a local record for staying in the cemetery overnight.

Bad Cluck: A haunted chicken is pestering the Casagrandes.

"Fails from the Crypt" contains examples of:

  • Bring My Brown Pants: Sameer brought extra pairs of underwear just in case the scary sights of the cemetery made him or his friends wet themselves. Also, during their second attempt at staying in the cemetery, Laird reveals that he's wearing a diaper.
  • Dwindling Party: As a result of being scared, Ronnie Anne's party drops out one by one. Casey is the first to wimp out when he gets scared by a walking skeleton. Then, Nikki and Sameer run out when Nikki's "spell book" turns out to be her mom's cookbook. Then, Laird, who is a Lovable Coward anyway, runs off when Sid's owl Gil warns the rest of the party of danger. Finally, Ronnie Anne and Sid run away.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: An unintentional example—after Ronnie Anne and the rest of her gang come clean to Rosa, Hector, Vito and Sergio about their plan to get back at them, Laird reveals that no one told him about said plan and claims that he really was genuinely scared the entire time. Apparently, Gil the Owl was supposed to inform Laird of the plan but forgot to do so (Gil apologizes for this, with Sid translating for him).
  • Manchild: Once again, Carlos and Maria squabble with each other, this time over who outlasted who in the cemetery when they were kids. It gets to the point where Maria plays the Annoying Younger Sibling and Carlos calls for their mom, Rosa.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Maria didn't mind Ronnie Anne spending the night in the cemetery.
  • Prank Punishment: Ronnie Anne's party all run out of the cemetery when they get scared by a walking skeleton, a giant spider, and a zombie. Turns out all this was caused by Rosa, Hector, Vito, and Sergio, who spent the night at the cemetery forty years ago, the only people to do so. They just can't handle their record being broken.
    • But their prank backfires when Ronnie Anne and Sid decide to try again. This time, Ronnie Anne and her friends, along with her mother and Tio Carlos, get back at Rosa, Hector, Sergio, and Vito when Maria and Carlos disguise themselves as a vampire and a werewolf respectively and scare them.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Ronnie Anne does this when begging her grandparents to let her into the cemetery—while it doesn't work on Rosa or Sergio, when she tries it on Hector, he caves and gives her permission.
  • Security Blanket: Laird has one to hide under whenever something scares him. Turns out Sid's owl, Gil, has one too.
  • Shout-Out: This episode's title is a reference to the 1950s EC Comics series, Tales From The Crypt.
  • Tears of Fear: Laird breaks down crying when he admits that he wasn't let in on Ronnie Anne's plan, explaining that he really was genuinely scared.

"Bad Cluck" contains examples of:

  • Big Eater: When the chicken ghost throws food at the Casagrandes, Hector decides to eat it all.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Hector's so terrified of the chicken ghost that he ends up telling Mr. Nakamura, Stanley Chang (Sid's dad) and even Arturo, Maria's ex-esposo (Hector's ex-yerno).
  • Demonic Possession: In the climax of the episode, the chicken ghost possesses Carlos.
  • Egg-Laying Male: Subverted—Sergio (a male Scarlet Macaw) appears to have laid an egg, but it turns out to be the doing of Alfredo the ghost chicken, who then makes eggs come out of Carlos's pants and everyone else's mouths.
  • Feathered Fiend: The chicken ghost, natch!
  • Here We Go Again! / Noodle Incident: The ending implies that Sergio has wronged a cow in some way, shape, or form.
  • Human Shield: When the chicken ghost attacks the Casagrandes with eggs, Sergio uses Bobby as a human shield.
  • Not Me This Time: Ronnie Anne initially assumes that the "haunting" is some kind of prank by Carl, who assures Ronnie Anne that it's not him and points out the chicken ghost to her.
  • Ocular Gushers: Frida does this out of fear at one point.
    • She does it again when her husband gets possessed by the chicken ghost.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: The ghost that haunts the Casagrandes is the ghost of a chicken named Alfredo, who was wronged by Sergio when they were in flight school. To list Sergio's offenses towards Alfredo in order:
    • 1.) Sergio pooped on Alfredo's car.
    • 2.) He ruined Alfredo's birthday party after spraying him with water.
    • 3.) He stole Alfredo's wallet (which had money in it).
    • 4.) Finally, Sergio stole Alfredo's sunglasses, which made the chicken so angry that he flatlined.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Mr.Nakamura and Stanley Chang after their methods (throwing beans and using snap pops) fail to scare Alfredo away.
  • Shown Their Work: There really is a Japanese spring festival where they throw beans to frighten evil spirits. This festival is called Setsubun, and it happens every year on February 3rd.
  • Toilet Humor: One of the reasons why the chicken ghost of Alfredo hates Sergio's guts is because Sergio pooped on his car when they were in flight school.
  • Whale Egg: Thanks to the chicken ghost, both Sergio and Carlos lay chicken eggs. Then CJ, Carlota and Lalo burp eggs.
