Recap / The Boondocks - S1 E4: "Granddad's Fight"

Go To

"Granddad's Fight" is the 4th episode of the 1st season of The Boondocks. It originally aired on November 27, 2005.

A "Nigga Moment" (a stupid, pointless fight between two black men) breaks out between Robert J. Freeman and Colonel H. Stinkmeaner (an evil old blind man). Despite Stinkmeaner's disability, he somehow defeats Robert and publicly humiliates him. Robert is mocked by his own grandson Riley, and the embarrassing event somehow gets a lot of media attention. Still very angry, Robert challenges Stinkmeaner to a rematch.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Murder: The rematch fight between Robert and Stinkmeaner ends with the former (unintentionally) beating up the latter to the point of death. Robert spends a night in jail, but is released without any criminal charges (thanks to getting a state boxing license earlier).
  • An Aesop: Don't fight with people over stupid or trivial reasons, or else somebody could end up dead. This is the first of four episodes revolving around the stupidity of "Nigga Moments".
  • Asshole Victim: Huey admits that the world is probably better off with Stinkmeaner dead, however the Freeman family still decide to mourn him anyway (as Robert didn't intend to kill him).
  • A-Team Firing: While Huey is explaining what a "Nigga Moment" is, we see two gangsters standing two feet away from each other, each shooting an entire clip at each other from point blank range, and neither one gets wounded... until the cops show up and waste them both.
  • Audible Sharpness: The katana in Huey's swordsman dream makes this sound.
  • Blind Driving: Even though Stinkmeaner is blind, the first thing we see him do is driving a car. When Huey points out that he could've killed someone, Stinkmeaner replies that he doesn't care.
  • Blind Weaponmaster: Zatoichi, the Blind Swordsman from Huey's imagination.
  • Blunt "Yes": After Stinkmeaner collides his car into Robert's:
Granddad: You hit my car! Are you blind?!
    Stinkmeaner: YES... I... AM. SO?!
  • Brick Joke: When Riley watches a video of a fight breaking out, he believes that you can just throw a chair to instigate it without needing to hit anyone. When confronted by an angry crowd demanding their money back, Riley throws a random chair. It doesn't hit anyone, but the crowd fights each other anyway.
Person 1: OH MY GOD! A CHAIR!
Person 2: (When the fight begins) I'M MAD, MAN!
Huey: (Watching the fight in annoyance) Niggas...
  • Catapult Nightmare: The way Huey wakes up from his dream of the Blind Weaponmaster.
  • Chairman of the Brawl: Played with. Apparently, a "Nigga Moment' can be invoked by throwing a chair around.
  • Chekhov's Gag: The "Señor Piñata" gag on TV calls back Riley's joke in the car.
  • Cluster N Bomb: This episode use the word "nigga" 64 times, more than any in the entire first season.
  • Conflict Ball: The "Nigga Moment". It describes a moment when ignorance overwhelms the mind of an otherwise logical Negro male, causing him to act in an illogical, self-destructive manner or, in Huey's words, "like a 'nigga'".
    • Such as getting into a shootout over a guy brushing against your shoulder on the street.
      • Huey visually demonstrates how a white man can avoid a "Nigga Moment", and thus defy this trope, if put in the same situation above, purely because he's white.
    • Or in the case of what Stinkmeaner does to Robert, it would be ramming into his car, and stepping on his newly bought shoes.
    • Lampshaded by Huey as the scene freezes before Grandad throws his fatal punch to Stinkmeaner so we can all look at how idiotic this situation is.
Huey: Y'know, we could all be readin' a book right now.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Stinkmeaner only won the first fight because he was lucky. But in the second fight, his blindness was no match for Robert's fury, which results in Robert accidentally killing Stinkmeaner.
  • Delayed Reaction: Subverted with Robert's tree kicking exercise.
Robert: Wa-ta! (Robert roundhouse kicks a tree)
Huey: What was that? An exhibition? You need emotional content! Now, try again.
Robert: Hoooooo.... WA-TAH!!! (Robert roundhouse kicks the tree hard)
    Huey: ...
    Ruckus: ...
Robert: (Beat) ....... DAAAAAAAMN!!! THAT HURT!!! DAMMIT BOY!!! (Robert falls to the ground clutching his leg in absolute pain)
  • Diagonal Cut: Huey cuts bamboo this way in his dream.
  • Disability Superpower: Subverted. Contrary to what Huey assumed, Stinkmeaner is not a blind martial artist with superhuman hearing; he just got lucky when he beat Robert with his cane. During their rematch, Robert easily kicks Stinkmeaner's ass to the point of (unintentionally) killing him, which leads to Robert being arrested and spending the rest of the night in jail.
  • Everybody Was Kung-Fu Fighting:
    • Obviously, there's the physical conflict between two old black men, which becomes a local sensation around Woodcrest.
    • Riley watches a video of a brawl breaking out at a hip hop awards ceremony after a chair is thrown.
    • After Stinkmeaner's sudden death, the spectators demand refunds from Riley. He remembers the earlier incident described above, so he throws a chair and starts another riot to divert attention from him.
  • Fist of Rage: Granddad clenches his fist in anger during his first encounter with Stinkmeaner.
  • Gigantic Moon: Appears in the backdrop in Huey's dream sequence.
  • Handicapped Badass: Huey thinks that Stinkmeaner defeated Robert because he had some kind of superhuman hearing to make up for his blindness. But this is subverted; it turns out that Stinkmeaner was just lucky enough to trip Robert with his cane and smack him once.
  • Humiliation Conga: Not only does Granddad get a beatdown from an old blind man, but has to endure a string of insults from his grandson, whom he doesn't even have the will to hit as he usually does; then he turns on the TV to watch the security camera footage on local news, national news, and international news! Robert even finds that he's earned the title of "Señor Piñata".
  • Jerkass: As usual, Riley is nothing but an insulting asshole who has no sympathy for Grandad's losing to Stinkmeaner, instead repeatedly insulting him for the loss and laughing about it (until Huey kicks Riley to make him shut up). Riley also decides to make an event out of Grandad's rematch for monetary reasons, not caring that Grandad could get hurt or worse.
  • Large Ham: Stinkmeaner, who tends to speak in screams and attack anyone within hitting distance.
  • Meaningful Name: "Stinkmeaner" pretty much describes the man.
  • Mirrored Confrontation Shot: The "Granddad vs. Stinkmeaner" poster hanging out in the streets.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Robert’s reaction when he sees that he’s actually killed Stinkmeaner.
  • Oh, Crap!: Huey realizes that Stinkmeaner doesn't, in fact, have superhuman hearing but just got lucky with his first attack.
Huey: (narrating) And as I watched Stinkmeaner move blindly around the ring, I had a terrifying realization. He wasn't a trained swordsman and he didn't have super hearing. He was a blind old man... who had just gotten lucky.
  • Once Killed a Man with a Noodle Implement: While Ruckus is trying to claim that white men are the best at fighting:
Uncle Ruckus: Jean-Claude Van Damme's the best martial artist in the world. He killed a man with his butt cheek power.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: You know Granddad's feeling bad when he can't even bring himself to whip Riley or when he realizes that Stinkmeaner died because of him.
  • Pre-Battle Banter: Stinkmeaner tries to intimidate Granddad before their showdown.
  • Shout-Out: "The only way to win is not to fight". "What was that? An exhibition? You need emotional content. Now, try again".
  • Teeth Flying: Stinkmeaner's teeth are flying when getting his ass whupped by Granddad.
