Recap / The Batman S 3 E 1 Batgirl Begins Part 1

Go To

A new villain has appeared, Poison Ivy, and she has managed to brainwash Batman. A new hero also appears- young Batgirl! Batgirl proceeds to explain how her best friend turned into a supervillain, and how she in turn donned the cape.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Actor Allusion: Temblor's abilities seem to based off of minor Spider-Man villain the Shocker, whom Temblor's voice actor voiced in the 90's animated series.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Barbara and Pamela call each other "Red".
  • Badass Adorable: Barbara's gymnast skills come in handy when keeping a thug from killing her best friend.
  • Big "NO!": Barbara when the plant fertilizer chemicals coat Pamela and knock her unconscious.
  • Blatant Lies: After Pamela’s mother has her voiced picked up on Temblor’s end, she tries to pass the voice off as “one of my henchmen”
  • Brick Joke: When Gordon and Barbara are making dinner, she asks her father when he is going to invite Batman to their apartment to have pork chops so she can meet him in person. After Temblor is defeated Barbara asks her father if he invited Batman for pork chops.
  • Cliffhanger: While in the ambulance Pamela gains Glowing Eyes of Doom
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: Despite no longer being wanted by the police, Batman hides from them when they show up, out of habit.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Pamela when hiring a thug from the Internet didn't consider that she would need to pay him eventually, and that he wouldn't take it well to a teenager hiring him.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Commissioner Gordon mentions the name of the chemical plant Temblor attacked at the beginning of the episode, then gets a call that Temblor has now been spotted at ChloroGene, Barbara realizes that Pamela is the mastermind behind the attacks.
Barbara: Neugog Chemicals? ChloroGene? Companies Red and I went to on protests… or scouting missions for Temblor's demolitions!
  • Excellent Judge of Character: Commissioner Gordon rightly believes that Pamela is trouble due to reading juvenile hall record about her extreme methods.
  • Fleeting Passionate Hobbies: Per her father, Barbara has a different friend and a different interest every month.
  • Foreshadowing: When she and Pamela contront the ChloroGene CEO and proceed to steal his bonzai tree, Barbara looks back at him hesitantly. This signifies that she has standards and they may not be aligned with Pamela's questionable morals.
    • Commissioner Gordon at one point refers to Pamela as a "bad seed".
  • How We Got Here: The episode starts with Poison Ivy mind-controlling Batman, and Batgirl fighting the two of them.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Gordon asks Barbara if she's hanging out with Pamela Isley, she snarks that she doesn't criticize who he hangs out with— Batman. The Commissioner doesn't have a response to that.
  • Mythology Gag: Pamela's and Barbara's nickname for each other is "Red", which is the nickname Catwoman and Harley Quinn give Poison Ivy in the comics and is occasionally featured in other media.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Temblor is a known criminal in Gotham, despite not appearing in the previous two seasons.
  • Redemption Rejection: After confronting Pamela for hiring Temblor, Barbara pleads with her to come to her senses and call her scheme off. Unfortunately, Pam stubbornly refuses.
Barbara: Pam, it's not too late. You have to stop this! …I don't wanna have to watch my dad read you your rights!
Pamela: And here I thought we were two peas in a pod. Should've known I couldn't trust the Commish's kid.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Pamela runs when her hired gun goes after her demanding payment after he realizes that a teenager conned him.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Both Batman and Barbara come to the same horrifying realization that Pamela hired an Internet thug to go after ChloroGene.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: While with Pamela, Barbara threatens the ChloroGene CEO and steals his bonsai. She also gets involved when Pamela hires a thug to destroy the corporation and he wants payment.
  • Wham Shot: The reveal that Pam Isley is the one who hired Temblor.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gordon calls out Barbara for hanging out with someone who is a Well-Intentioned Extremist, and Barbara in turn asks Pamela What Were You Thinking? in hiring a thug to commit sabotage.
  • What Were You Thinking?: Barbara's reaction to finding out Pamela hired Temblor.
Barbara: Did one of your twigs snap, Pam? You hired a thug!
