Recap / The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes! S2 E24 "Operation Galactic Storm"

Go To

The Kree Empire's gameplan is finally revealed. They plan on using the solar system's unique properties to create a staging area, by opening a wormhole and bringing their galactic armada through, essentially occupying Earth in the process. Problem is opening the wormhole will destabilise the sun and destroy it entirely — just as Kang predicted. This takes our heroes to the hottest war zone in history, as they battle the Kree on the surface of the sun. Unfortunately the wormhole generators are active, and Captain America will have to choose between sacrificing a teammate to shut it down or letting it tear the sun apart and end all life as we know it... just as Kang predicted.

The story continues in "Live Kree or Die"

Tropes:

  • Brick Joke: Before boarding, Hawkeye remarks he hates space since it affects his aim. Just before the rest of the team enters the wormhole to destroy the generators, Black Panther tells him not to miss.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Yellowjacket's unstable shrinking technology proves perfect for shrinking a time bomb out of existence.
  • Cliffhanger: The wormhole may be shut down, but the Avengers wind up stuck on the other side, with the Kree armada staring them in the face.
  • Convection Shmonvection: They're practically on the surface on the sun...
  • Cutting the Knot: How Black Panther deals with a Kree "Mandroid" — master the ship's controls and teleport that sucka into the sun.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Placing the wormhole generator so close to the sun will cause it to rip in half. Mar-Vell believes that the Kree are doing this to deliberately punish Earth for the defeat and imprisonment of Ronan.
  • It Has Been an Honor: Black Panther to his teammates.
  • Lampshade Hanging:
    • After multiple episodes referred to Earth as a strategic position, Ms. Marvel points out it's space and that a ship could just go around it. Mar-Vell explains that it's not the location itself that's of interest to the Kree and others, but how easy it is in this region to find, open, and stabilize wormholes.
    • Iron Man questions how Mar-Vell knows so much about engineering for a xenobiologist. Mar-Vell says this is standard material back home.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: Played with. The team agrees to travel through the wormhole with Hawkeye so that he won't be left stranded alone in Kree space, but Black Panther must be left behind in order for the plan to work.
  • Oh, Crap!: Iron Man upon realizing the Kree opening a wormhole near the Sun will rip it in half.
  • Properly Paranoid: With three Avengers at his cell, Mar-Vell immediately knows something big is going down.
  • Race Against the Clock: Get to the Sun and stop the generators from activating the wormhole. The Avengers ultimately fail, so they then only have six minutes before the Sun gets ripped apart.
  • Relocating the Explosion: Yellowjacket can't disarm the bomb before it goes off, so instead he just uses his shrinking technology to send it to the Microverse where it detonates harmlessly. Though he pretends there's nothing he can do until the very last moment just to mess with Abigail.
  • Sadistic Choice:
Cap: We're not leaving him behind, Tony.
Iron Man: Cap, this is it. This is the moment Kang talked about—the decision you make right now. This is what determines the future. If we don't shut down this wormhole, it's over for everyone.
Black Panther: Iron Man is correct, Captain. This is the only thing that matters.
    [Cap turns the quinjet around]
  • This Is Gonna Suck: The last scene.
    Wasp: A-are we alive?
Ms. Marvel: [seeing what's ahead] Not for long.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Abigail to Yellowjacket when he reveals he was just being joking about not being able to stop the time bomb. She promptly uppercuts him after he reveals it.
