Recap / The Americans S6E9 - Jennings, Elizabeth

Go To

Stan finally tells Aderholt about his suspicions of Elizabeth and Philip, as well as how he's investigated those suspicions. Aderholt is dubious, but on his end, he interviews Father Viktor (Alex Kuznetsov), a Russian Orthodox Priest who tells Aderholt he thinks Father Andrei works for the KGB. The FBI also pick up Oleg after he's picked up Philip's message. Oleg admits he's there to stop anti-Gorbachev forces, which Stan doesn't care about, but he won't give up anything more.

Elizabeth continues to watch Nesterenko, and stops an attempt on his life by Tatiana (which alerts the FBI someone is trying to kill him). She then tells Claudia what she's done, and Claudia is upset by this. Philip goes on to meet with Father Alexei, but when Father Alexei tells him about the FBI meeting with Father Viktor, Philip tells Father Alexei to flee the country, and Philip narrowly escapes capture by the FBI. He then phones Elizabeth with a coded message to let her know it's time for them to flee the country, and she immediately goes into the basement to prepare for their escape.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Blatant Lies: When Stan calls Pastor Tim (see Call-Back below), Pastor Tim claims he knows nothing about what Elizabeth and Philip did outside of their work for his church.
  • Call-Back: Among the people who Stan gets in touch with while investigating Elizabeth and Philip is Pastor Tim, who is still in Argentina.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: A Gender Flipped version; when Paige hears from Brian, the Congressman's aide she had slept with, about Jackson getting drunk after his meeting with a "woman", she realizes the "woman" was Elizabeth, and yells at her mother for using Jackson like that, even calling her a whore. Elizabeth tries to deny it first, and then snaps Paige has had a privileged life compared to what Elizabeth had to go through when she was growing up.
    • Another Gender Flipped version happens earlier when Elizabeth calls out her mother figure Claudia for betraying the mission, and for lying to her. Claudia responds that it's Elizabeth who's betrayed the mission.
  • Character Title: Though Stan, of course, finds no listing for Elizabeth when he looks her up on his computer.
  • Flashback: Elizabeth recalls an early part of her training when she came across an injured comrade in the street.
  • In the Back: How Elizabeth kills Tatiana before she can kill Nesterenko.
  • I Warned You: When Stan visits Oleg after he's been arrested, he reminds Oleg he had told him it would come to this.
  • Let Me Get This Straight...: After Stan confesses his suspicions about Elizabeth and Philip:
Aderholt: You think Elizabeth Jennings was Gregory Thomas' girlfriend?
  • No One Gets Left Behind: In the Flashback, Elizabeth's instructor stresses the importance of this to her, no matter what the mission entailed.
  • Reveal Shot: After Elizabeth flees the scene, we see Tatiana, wearing a blonde wig, was the one who attempted to kill Nesterenko.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When Philip realizes the FBI is on to Father Andrei, he immediately flees the scene.
  • Spy Speak: Philip alerts Elizabeth to the fact things have gone haywire by telling her he can't make it home to dinner because "things are very topsy-turvy at the office".
