Recap / TheAmericans S1E3 - Gregory

Go To

When Elizabeth and Philip notice an ad placed by Robert, despite the fact he's been killed, Elizabeth reaches out to Gregory (Derek Luke), an old friend, to try and scope out the situation. Turns out the FBI has also figured out Robert's identity, thanks to a tip from Nina, and they also identify his widow Joyce (Audrey Esparza). However, before the FBI can approach her, Gregory and his team grab her, and take her to Elizabeth and Philip, who promise to help her and her baby. Also, Elizabeth and Philip find out they have a new handler, Claudia (Margo Martindale).

This episode contains examples of:

  • Back Story: Elizabeth tells Philip she joined the KGB when she was 17, had never had a boyfriend, and felt uncomfortable with Philip at first. It wasn't until she met Gregory, who shared her passion for the cause (and also had passion for her) that she felt comfortable with someone else.
  • Call-Back: Claudia tells Elizabeth Zhukov is thinking of her, and asks if she has a message for him.
  • Character Title: Gregory, whom Elizabeth has a history with.
  • Foreshadowing: Elizabeth calls Claudia a replacement for Gabriel, who will come back to that job in Season 3.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Philip gets very upset when he finds out Elizabeth and Gregory had an affair, and she was ready to leave Philip for Gregory after Paige was born.
  • I Warned You: When Philip meets with a contact, two of the mooks in the room are in his blind spot, and he asks them to step away. When they refuse, Philip beats them up, and says to the contact, "I warned them."
  • Rejected Apology: It's left ambiguous whether Philip accepts Elizabeth's apology for having an affair with Gregory, and for talking about running off with him.
  • Shout-Out: Roxy Music's "Sunset" plays during the end, when Joyce's baby is taken to the Soviet Union, and the FBI finds Joyce dead of an apparent drug overdose.
  • True Companions: Elizabeth wants to turn Joyce over to Claudia because she wants to do right by Robert.
