There can only be one.
Tobias: So, if all of those other friends were gone, we'd be best friends.
Gumball: Technically, yeah. I guess I'd just have to make do with you.

Gumball becomes offended when Tobias begins playfully insulting him and trying to insinuate himself as Gumball's new friend. When Gumball tells Tobias that they can't be friends, Tobias takes it well...until he begins knocking off Gumball's other friends, a la Highlander.

Tropes:

  • All Your Powers Combined: Tobias gains the powers of all Gumball's friends by injuring them, or so he thinks.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Gumball attempts to get Tobias to Get Out! after already throwing him out once.
Gumball: You weren't here when we fixed the roof, and you won't be here when we fix the door!
Tobias: But you already fixed the—
(Cut to a wide, exterior shot of the front door... where the door shakes without opening. Cut back inside with Tobias' face planted on the door.)
Gumball: Dagnabit, fixed it too well.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment:
Darwin: OK, Tobias, I didn't want to say this...
(Darwin walks behind Gumball and pushes him toward Tobias)
    Darwin: ... so Gumball will.
  • BFS: Tobias attacks Leslie with a sword so huge it takes him five seconds to take it out of his trenchcoat, which smashes right through a concrete pillar. It turns out that he was just wielding a balloon sword and didn't even try to attack him with it.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Tobias makes peace with himself over his role as Gumball's friend (and his place in the universe) and has a Friendship Moment with Gumball. However he leaves Darwin pinned under the couch. The episode closes as Darwin slowly suffocates.
  • Bookends: Tobias' first and last Day in the Limelight involves his status as a friend to Gumball.
  • Bowdlerization: The Turkish dub of this episode cut the entire part where Darwin takes a look at Gumball's ego.
  • Brick Joke: Gumball tries to tell Tobias that he's not the kind of friend they'd call to move a couch. In the end Tobias declines to help move a couch off a suffocating Darwin, since he's not that close a friend.
  • Cross-Referenced Titles: To "The Third", another numerical-based title. Both episodes deal with the dynamic of Gumball's friends being shaken up by Tobias.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The last one for Tobias.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Leslie throws his head at Tobias to stop him, only for his body to fall over shortly after realizing how useless it was.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite being willing to use everyone's powers, Tobias decides to avoid using Sarah's The Power of Friendship, since drawing the enemy into falling in love with you is clearly useless.
  • Evil Laugh: Tobias lets this out multiple times as he goes on to "kill" Gumball's friends. At least, from his perspective.
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: When entering the Wattersons' house to finish off Darwin, Tobias uses Carrie's powers to phase through the door. In reality, he had to squeeze through the mail slot just to get in.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex:
Gumball: Well, now we know that I truly love myself.
  • Ghost in the Machine: Darwin tells Gumball to "[strip] back the layers of your personality", which he accomplishes by peeling apart his body to show a series of emotional personification, each inside the last:
  • Heel Realization: After realizing that he didn't even gain the powers of Gumball's friends, he apologizes for going too far and finally makes peace with him.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: Tobias is one of Gumball's friends, but decides he can become his best friend by injuring every friend closer to Gumball.
  • Musical Pastiche: The music that plays while Tobias attacks is a clear pastiche of Queen, who made much of the music for the Highlander soundtrack. In particular, most of it is reminiscent of "Gimme the Prize", while the piano playing when Tobias phases through the front door sounds line the main line of "Seven Seas of Rhye".
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Despite clearly not killing all of Gumball's friends and squeezing through the mail slot of the Watterson house, Tobias somehow managed to lift the entire couch and pin it on Darwin.
  • Mythology Gag: In Tobias' modified flashback to "The Phone", Gumball appears in his season 2 design.
  • Once More, with Clarity: After it seems that Tobias has killed all of Gumball's friends and absorbed their powers, it's revealed near the end that it all happened in his head, and he was pretty much embarassing himself in public.
  • Overly Long Gag: When Gumball throws Tobias out of the house, Tobias keeps rolling and rolling for a couple minutes until he ends up back at the Watterson's house.
  • Screaming Warrior: Played for Laughs. The montage of Tobias injuring Gumball's friends to gain their abilities accompanied by his Evil Laugh? He was just screaming wildly at them while they just stood in unamusement.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: Gumball is fat for one scene of this episode, even though he’s usually very skinny.
  • There Can Be Only One: After Gumball and Darwin attempt to tell him that he's not Gumball's best friend, Tobias decides that Gumball can only have one friend, him, and goes hunting his classmates, but not exactly...
  • Through the Eyes of Madness: Tobias attacking his classmates and taking their powers turns out to just be his imagination. He really just ran into them, yelled a lot, and ran away. Though Tobias still managed to pin Darwin under a couch somehow.
  • Visual Pun: Gumball's ego literally goes through the roof.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Discussed in this episode as Gumball he is completely okay with being this with Darwin, but feels uncomfortable when Tobias tries to be this to him.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: The latter half of the episode is an homage to Highlander, with Tobias hunting down Gumball's other friends as the Immortals hunted down each other. He even wears a trenchcoat that conceals a sword just like MacLeod.
