When Louie and Granny Jojo plan to marry and move to Florida, Richard adopts Louie as one of the kids to stop it. But when Louie retaliates by adopting Nicole as his daughter, the Watterson family tree becomes hopelessly tangled and the kids decide to get Richard's estranged father, Frankie, to fix everything.

Tropes:

  • Adult Adoptee: Richard adopts Louie in order to prevent him and Jojo from getting married. Louie retaliates by adopting Nicole, resulting in a Tangled Family Tree.
  • Autocannibalism: Richard peels his sunburned skin off and eats it. Louie tells him he should eat things that are actually food (and also less food).
    Tastes like my bathwater.
  • Delayed Causality: Gumball shoulder checks Frankie in line but he doesn't stumble over until he's up next.
  • Department of Major Vexation: While visiting town hall, the paper woman says "This is the kingdom of bureaucracy. Everything happens in its own time. Usually too late." Martin is transparently apathetic to working and at one point the Wattersons are literally caught in a maze of red tape (line borders).
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Parodied; Richard and Louie come up with their adoption plans by cherrypicking what they hear from Gumball and applying some Insane Troll Logic.
  • Facepalm: After Gumball inadvertently gives Richard the idea to adopt Louie to gain control over him, the Wattersons kids all faceplam. Darwin accidentally knocks himself out doing so since he was holding a crowbar.
  • Given Name Reveal: Frankie reveals that Jojo's full first name is Joanna.
  • Heel Realization: Frankie aborts his plan in taking the Watterson home away when he saw Richard's making a sad look on his face, reminding him of the last time he saw Richard before he left him and Jojo, waving goodbye while his son smiled as he thought he was getting milk. He then allowed his family through so Jojo and Louie can get married and claim ownership of the Watterson family's home back. Lampshaded by Granny Jojo:
Jojo: He's having a moment of humanity... Quickly let's take advantage of his weakness!
  • Honor Before Reason: Louie may be a 72 year old man but his upbringing still leads him to respect Richard's authority as his new father.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Richard and Louie come up with ridiculous plans by cherrypicking keywords from something someone just said and putting them together. Anais stops Gumball before he can make the same mistake.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: The Wattersons trying to beat Frankie in line to get their paperwork processed is treated like a high tension race complete with suspenseful music.
  • Nested Mouths: Nicole gets one like a xenomorph when she snarls in anger at Martin. She can be seen holding the paperwork he gives up in her mouth.
  • Offscreen Reality Warp: The first-person introduction of Frankie has him look through the paper to find how to con a new home. When he looks up from the paper, he and the audience see that the walls of his home have been repossessed.
  • Portable Hole: Frankie asks the CEO of Chanax what he's gonna do with the drapes and window right before he takes the window with the drapes, leaving a featureless wall segment where it once was.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Nicole punctuates her threat to the particularly apathetic Martin with hashtags (#). He points out that's not how hashtags work before she grows an extra mouth to hiss at him.
  • Retcon: In "The Man", it was stated Richard's father left forty-two years ago. In this episode, it's stated to have been thirty-three. The writers probably realized the original number would make Richard older than what makes sense given his history (i.e. that he's about the same age as Nicole, that they married relatively young, and the age of their kids, and the fact Word of God would later confirm he and Nicole are 38).
  • Running Gag: Whenever someone succeeds into tricking somebody else into signing papers, they end up ripping their shirt open in triumph. Louie, who is normally shirtless, has to ask Nicole permission to wear a shirt so he can do just that.
  • Sequel Episode: The episode follows up on Louie and Granny Jojo dating as well as Richard's facing how his father abandoned him in "The Man".
  • Special Guest: Rich Fulcher, comedian, co-star of Snuff Box, and regular cast member on The Mighty Boosh, plays Richard's father Frankie.
  • Tangled Family Tree: Richard adopts Louie, making a 72 year old man Gumball, Darwin, and Anais's brother. Louie then adopts Nicole, which makes him their maternal grandfather, Nicole their niece, and Richard their great-grandfather as well as their nephew and father. Basically, in terms of family hierarchy, everyone is effectively brought down a peg and once removed in the loop with the only person unaffected being Richard's Disappeared Dad at the top in traditional authority.
  • Traitor Shot: Richard has a particularly diabolical grin right before succeeding in tricking Louie.
  • Tricked into Signing: Richard adopts Louie by claiming the paperwork was a wedding guest list. Louie does the same to Nicole by claiming the papers were a school signup sheet. Frankie then had Richard signed paperwork claiming it was to adopt him to restore the family tree, but it was to actually take away home ownership from him and his family.
