Masami (a white, fluffy cloud and Elmore's resident spoiled Daddy's Girl) wants to show off to the other girls by pretending Darwin is her boyfriend and kissing him, which Gumball is determined to save him from.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Kiss: Between Gumball and Darwin at the end of the episode. Luckily, they weren't aware of this, but it's mentioned in "The Name" they found out eventually.
  • Almost Kiss: Gumball and Penny were about to kiss and Masami was about kiss Darwin, but Banana Joe chopping down the tree causes Gumball to slide across the floor and causes the aforementioned Accidental Kiss.
  • Bowdlerization: Versions of this episode shown on Cartoon Network's Asia and Australia channel edit the following:
    • All scenes of Tobias trying to turn "Pals Before Gals" into a blood pact is changed to just a pact. Because of this, the scene of Tobias trying to cut his palm as part of a Sworn Brothers ritual (only to fail because he's using a blunt stick instead of a sharp object) was also cut.
    • Any scenes where the characters jump out of windows are cut.
    • Gumball and Darwin mentioning how great their kiss was (not knowing that they kissed each other) was cut. It's unknown whether or not the part on "The Name" where they decide to erase that memory because of how embarrassing it was is edited as well.
  • Bros Before Hoes: Banana Joe insists upon following the G-rated version of the phrase, "Pals Before Gals". However, his attitude is less about friendship (or toxic masculinity), and more the kind of "Girls Have Cooties" mentality that most pre-pubescent boys have.
  • Determinator: Masami will stop at nothing to impress her friends and we do mean nothing.
  • A Day in the Limelight: This episode focuses on Masami.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • Carmen is later established to be Alan’s girlfriend, so it feels weird to have her to not have a boyfriend. Though it's possible that they first became a couple after this episode.
    • Tobias's attitude completely contrasts with later episodes where his is a Casanova Wannabe.
    • Molly's voice in this episode is quite different from later episodes, being more high pitched and lacking the nasalness she has later on.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Darwin, a fish, decides to hide from Masami in the swimming pool... by holding his breath.
  • Half-Baked Niceness: Masami desperately tries to convince her group that Darwin is her boyfriend by explaining why she likes him. But because of how on-the-spot she was with her claim, she struggles with her reasoning and says he's great because he has legs and a head.
  • High-Dive Hijinks: Gumball does a high dive into the school pool to get Masami wet so she'll go away without finding Darwin. However, he spots Penny, and begins wondering if helping Darwin is worth bothering Penny. Then he belly-flops onto the water, which is anything but soft.
  • Hypocrite: Masami chides the girls for pretending to have boyfriends when she herself is pretending that Darwin is her boyfriend.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Gumball thinks if you can't see someone else, they can't see you, so he and Darwin try to sneak by Masami by shoving lunch trays in their own faces and shuffling around.
  • Karma Houdini: Masami gets no repercussions for forcing Darwin to be her boyfriend.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Banana Joe's reward for chopping down the tree? It crushing him.
  • Mundane Solution: Darwin tries Rocky's advice on getting rid of girlfriends: talk honestly about your emotions, and they go away. Since Masami didn't actually care about Darwin, she just cries until Darwin takes it back and agrees to kiss her.
  • The Quiet One: With the exception of his blood pact scene (to which he had one line in), Tobias doesn't talk in this episode.
  • Running Gag: A honking sound is heard every time Penny spots Gumball during the episode. This sound also makes a reappearance in other episodes, such as "The Shell" and “The Party”.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Masami decides that Darwin is her boyfriend to impress her own friends. Darwin's attitude throughout the episode is pretty much this, even down to saying the trope name word for word.
  • Soft Water: Inverted; when Gumball jumps off a diving board into the school swimming pool, he belly flops so hard against the surface of the water that it takes a couple seconds before the surface gives way and he finally sinks.
  • Sworn Brothers: Parodied. Tobias tries to turn the oath of "Pals Before Galls" into a blood pact. He's unable to draw any blood because all he had to cut his hand was a blunt stick.
  • Treehouse of Fun: Played with. Most of the girls and Leslie like Molly's treehouse, but Masami doesn't find it impressive, claiming that they only find the house special because it's in a tree.
