Who's Your Mommy?

When Carl visits Planet Shmengy, he gets infected by a face-hugging alien parasite and starts exhibiting some strange behavior. It is soon revealed that he has become impregnated with an electric space jellyfish baby.

Clash of the Cousins

When Jimmy and his parents go to his Great Aunt Amanda's house to celebrate her birthday, Jimmy tries to undo his reputation as the Neutron family's black sheep. He gives them presents, but they are sabotaged into exploding and Jimmy is given the blame. Jimmy realizes that there's an evil genius in the Neutron family who's after Amanda's fortune, and he has to find out who before they make another attempt on his family's lives.

"Who's Your Mommy?" provides examples of:

  • Big Blackout: The alien mother causes a city-wide blackout in Retroville when she searches for her baby.
  • Brutal Honesty: When a face-hugging alien parasite attaches itself to Carl's face, Carl asks Jimmy and Sheen if he has something on his lip. Jimmy assures Carl that everything is going to be fine, but Sheen holds nothing back when telling Carl that the alien is hideous.
  • Comically Oversized Butt: Carl is impregnated, Face-Hugger style, with the alien baby making his butt glow purple and grow to a ridiculous size.
  • Face Full of Alien Wing-Wong: When Carl is impregnated with an alien child, the extra fat grows out from well, his butt... but let's not go there.
  • Harmless Electrocution:
    • After Carl gives birth to Shmengo, he says goodbye to him so his mother will leave Earth in peace. He gives Shmengo a hug goodbye, and Shmengo electrocutes him. Carl survives, and this exchange occurs after Shmengo leaves:
Jimmy: Carl, that hug contained 10,000 volts of pure energy! Wasn't it painful?
Carl: Saying goodbye to your kids is always painful, Jimmy.
    • One month later, Jimmy, Carl, and Sheen return to Shmengy to celebrate Shmengo's birthday. Carl hugs Shmengo and gets electrocuted, then Sheen hugs Shmengo and gets electrocuted as well. He enjoys it and hugs Shmengo a second time. When Carl tries to get Jimmy to hug Shmengo, Jimmy's less than cooperative.
  • Hidden Depths: It is revealed in this episode that Butch has taking up stacking sticks as a hobby to curb his anger, as per the recommendation of his counselor. When the lights go out, he says "Okay, now I'm mad!"
  • I Want Grandkids: Mr. and Mrs. Wheezer are fully supportive of Carl being pregnant with an alien baby, as they've alays wanted to have grandchildren, regardless if they're not human.
  • Mister Seahorse: Carl gets impregnated with an alien baby during an interstellar visit. There are a bunch of allusions to the biology of it, but most of the subject is covered by the stereotypical motherly personality Carl begins to develop, even letting some of the girls in his class throw him a baby shower. The "birth" is non-explicit and the newborn simply phases outside of Carl's body. Oh, and his pregnancy occurred on his backside, not the typical belly region. Make of that what you will.
  • Mood-Swinger: As part of his pregnancy, Carl goes through mood swings.
Carl (angry) Is that another fat joke? (gleeful) Because if so, it was very funny, (gloomy) and very hurtful!
  • Pet the Dog: Cindy, Libby, and the other other girls throw Carl a baby shower at Cindy's house to prepare for the arrival of the alien baby.
  • Shockingly Expensive Bill: Around the time that the Alien Mother searches for her missing baby, Hugh is given a high electricity bill. When he goes to the Retro Utilities Elctric and Gas company to complain, this exchange occurs:
Hugh: This electricity bill is outrageous, and I won't pay it! (The power goes out all over for Retroville) Ooh, I didn't know you were so strapped for cash. Will you take a check.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: At the baby shower, Sheen, who's normally very masculine, is seen wearing a pink hat and apron as he brings scones to the party guests.
Sheen: Who wants clotted cream with their scones? (Beat) ...this is much more masculine than it looks.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: This episode's plot is kickstarted when Jimmy, Carl, and Sheen go to Shmengy to find Sheen's missing Ultra Lord action figure. When Carl asks Sheen why he couldn't just buy a replacement Ultra Lord, Sheen says that every Ultra Lord is precious to him in a different special way.
  • Wacky Cravings: After Jimmy gets the alien parasite off of Carl's face. Carl gets a sudden craving for a bowl of ice cream topped with jalepeno peppers, dill pickles, strawberries, salmon, and lard.
    Sheen: Yuck! Strawberries?

"Clash of the Cousins" provides examples of:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When Judy tells Jimmy's relatives that Jimmy's inventions have saved the town numerous times, they point out that they also brought down the very things they saved it from. They cite a giant meteor, an army of evil aliens, and an army of walking pants, all of which appeared in previous episodes.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Jimmy gets on his family's good side by giving them gifts, Aunt Amanda says "It's too bad your dear old Granny couldn't be here to see this.", and funeral music plays as the Neutron family lower their heads, implying that Granny Neutron is dead. Amanda then says "But she's in Reno, kicking butt at the slots!"
  • Beneath Suspicion: Jimmy deduces that one member of the extended Neutron family is secretly an evil genius capable of sabotaging his inventions. Unfortunately, he never suspected that the secret genius was a toddler, and Eddie only reveals himself when he gets the upper hand.
  • Birthday Episode: This episode takes place on the birthday of Jimmy's Great Aunt Amanda.
  • Black Sheep: Most of the Neutron extended family views Jimmy as such, correctly pointing out that, while he may have saved the day quite often, more often than not, it was one of his inventions that caused the problem in the first place. Subverted by the end when he saves them all and they appreciate him more, especially since he saves them from the new Neutron black sheep, Eddie.
  • Brainy Baby: Despite being only 17.5 months old, Eddie is capable of reading, walking, talking, and other things human adults can do. However, as his next appearance in The League of Villains shows, he is incapable of changing his own diapers and controling his excretion/digestive system.
  • Clashing Cousins: Jimmy has an antagonistic relationship with his cousin Eddie, who is trying to destroy the Neutron family in order to get Aunt Amanda's money for himself.
  • Clear My Name: When Jimmy's inventions are sabotaged into exploding and Jimmy is given the blame, he deduces there's an evil genius trying to destroy the Neutron family and make him look bad. He has to find out who the evil genius is and stop him or her before he or she makes another attempt on the Neutron family's lives. This isn't easy since Hugh and Judy grounded him from the party, so Carl and Sheen have to collect DNA samples from Cousin Gomer and Cousin Annabelle.
  • Clutching Hand Trap: When Sheen tries to get a DNA sample from Gomer to see whether or not he's secretly an evil genius, Gomer is revealed to have gotten his right hand caught in a pickle jar.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Sheen gets a sample of Gomer's spit, Jimmy bursts in and says "The charade is over, Cousin Gomer!" Upon hearing this, Gomer says "Charades? I thought we was playing ping-pong?"
  • Continuity Nod: The Neutrons bring up Jimmy's various inventions from the past that have caused danger somewhat:
Judy: Jimmy's gadgets have saved the town dozens of times.
Kari: Sure... after he brought down a giant meteor to destroy us all!
Newt: Or those evil rotten aliens!
Annabelle: OR PANTS! HORRIBLE WALKING PANTS!
Gomer: Uh, which cousins are you again?
  • The Ditz: Despite being a grown man, Jimmy's cousin Gomer is extremely dumb. While Jimmy suspects that he may only have been acting dumb to cover up the fact that he's an evil genius trying to destroy the Neutron family so he can inherit Amanda's fortune, this turns out not to be the case when Gomer's DNA sample proves negative.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Early in the episode, Jimmy is seen as the Neutron family's black sheep, and when he tries to get on his family's good side by giving them gifts, they are sabotaged into exploding and he is given the blame. By the end of the episode, Jimmy exposes Eddie as the evil genius trying to destroy the Neutron family and saves them from him, and they appreciate him more while branding Eddie as the new black sheep.
  • Enfant Terrible: Eddie is just as smart as Jimmy, but is evil and a baby.
  • Evil-Detecting Baby: Subverted with Eddie; early in the episode, he cries when Jimmy's inventions explode. After Eddie reveals himself to be the evil genius, it is revealed that he was only pretending to act innocent to make Jimmy look bad so no one would suspect that he's trying to destroy the Neutron family so he can inherit Amanda's fortune.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Eddie has a really deep voice, a clear contrast to his small appearance.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • When Hugh assures the entire Neutron family that they love Aunt Amanda for who she is and not because of her fabulous wealth, Eddie hits him with his rattle. This is a clue to Eddie being the evil genius trying to destroy the Neutron family for the purpose of inheriting Amanda's fortune.
    • When Jimmy, Carl, and Sheen are grounded to Eddie's bedroom, a mechanical panel can be seen in the background on the toy chest.
  • Happy Birthday to You!: The adults sing "Happy birthday!" to the tune of the "Halleluiah" song when preparing Amanda's birthday cake.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Jimmy's relatives may have been mean to Jimmy when he tried to be nice to them, but when Judy tells them that his inventions have saved the town numerous times, they rightfully tell her that, more often than not, they also brought down the very hazards they saved them from.
  • Lost Food Grievance: When Jimmy takes Aunt Amanda's spatula back to conceal it before it explodes, Amanda backs into Carl's 137-bean salad. Carl does not take this well.
  • Made of Explodium: When Jimmy gives his relatives presents, the tritium batteries in them overload and explode. Jimmy suspects that there's an evil genius who sabotaged his presents by bombarding their batteries with Delta waves.
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: Eddie might be a super genius like Jimmy, but some of his actions show he is still limited due to only being 17.5 months old. He throws a temper tantrum when Jimmy causes his rattle to explode, thus outing himself to the rest of the family, he is horrified at the suggestion he be kept on a baby leash, and he randomly stops his We Will Meet Again vow to Jimmy to suddenly ask where's his favorite Sippy Cup.
  • Obfuscating Insanity: One of Jimmy's suspects is Cousin Annabelle, whom he believes is only acting crazy to cover up the fact that she's an evil genius trying to destroy the Neutron family. Unofrtunately, he finds out that that's not the case when Annabelle's DNA proves negative.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: One of Jimmy's suspects is Cousin Gomer, whom he believes is only acting dumb to cover up the fact that he's an evil genius trying to destroy the Neutron family. Unfortunately, he finds out that that's not the case when Gomer's DNA proves negative.
  • Reused Character Design: Eddie's model was reused from when Granny Neutron turned into a baby in "Granny Baby".
  • Saying Too Much: When Jimmy reveals he rigged Eddie's rattle to explode the same way Eddie did with his gifts earlier, Eddie angrily yells at Jimmy for breaking his rattle, revealing his intelligence to the rest of the family. His attempts to cover this up by acting cute fail, since everyone now knows Jimmy's the good nephew.
  • Time Out:
    • After the Neutron family's presents explode, they are quick to blame Jimmy, so Hugh and Judy make Jimmy stay in Amanda's house as punishment, lest Amanda writes all of them out of her will.
    • Aunt Amanda gives Eddie a time-out after he attempts to fake his innocence after Jimmy exposes him for the evil genius that he is.
  • Tempting Fate: After Aunt Amanda's barbecue spatula explodes and Jimmy knocks Amanda over while trying to save her, Jimmy assures Amanda that an incident like that will never happen again. Cue the rest of the Neutron family's cybernetic palm pagers detonating.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: Jimmy's Great Aunt Amanda, Aunt Kari, and cousins Gomer and Annabelle all bear striking resemblances to his father Hugh, having the same big noses and chins.
  • We Will Meet Again: When Eddie's evil plan to destroy the Neutron family is foiled by Jimmy, Eddie vows that he'll get back at him the next time they meet.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Jimmy isn't usually one to do so (not on purpose, anyway), but when he finds out that Eddie is the evil genius, he fights him to expose his true colors. The Neutron family is horrified when they see this, but when Jimmy ends up exposing Eddie's true colors by sabotaging Eddie's rattle so it will explode, Eddie is branded as the new black sheep of the Neutron family.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Eddie pretends to act like an Evil-Detecting Baby when Jimmy's presents explode to keep the extended Neutron family from finding out he's really an evil genius who sabotaged the presents to make Jimmy look bad. When Jimmy exposes Eddie's true colors at the end of the episode, Amanda becomes furious with Eddie and gives him a time-out and forgives Jimmy.
