Batman and Talia go after Ra's al Ghul, who is in search of an ancient immortal queen in Egypt.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Ancient Tomb: Exploring an ancient Egyptian tomb takes up the second half of the episode.
  • Androcles' Lion: At the end of the episode, Ra's al Ghul leaves Batman stranded in the desert. Ra's enforcer, Ubu, who is grateful that Batman saved his life earlier, passes him a canteen.
  • Combat Tentacles: Thoth Kephera conjures some kind of slimy vine-creatures from the muck surrounding her.
  • Life Drinker: This turns out to be the secret of Thoth's immortality, as shown when she draws Ra's towards her and starts draining years out of him. After Thoth is sealed away and the tomb collapses on top of her, Ra's returns to his previous state.
  • Load-Bearing Boss: When Batman collapses a giant statue in order to seal the Secret Underground Passage to Thoth away, the entire tomb ends up crumbling as a result of the impact, leading to a race for the exit (and Batman pulling Ubu to safety just in time).
  • Humanoid Abomination: Thoth Kephera. Batman evens calls her "that... thing."
  • I Have No Daughter!: Ra's declares this in this episode, likely since he believes he's close to gaining true immortality and no longer needs an heir, but perhaps also because he must have known Talia had a part in Batman's escape in the last episode, and thus was indirectly responsible for his defeat. He changes his mind in the end, when he accepts her and apologizes for his rash actions.
  • Immortality Seeker: Ra's as per usual.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: Downplayed. While not planned at the time, this is the first episode of the DCAU to establish the existence of the supernatural in the setting (something that will gradually become more important down the road with STAS and Justice League).
  • Internal Reveal: Bruce and Talia both learn what the audience has known since the ending of "The Demon's Quest" (that Ra's survived his plunge into the Pit).
  • Kick the Dog: Ra's leaving Talia to die.
Ra's: Farewell, beloved daughter. It is often said one finds immortality through one’s own offspring. I know that now to be a lie.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Batman decries the story of Thoth Khepera as being “like a bad Saturday morning serial”.
  • Outside-Genre Foe: To date, Thoth Kephera was the first supernatural, magical foe that the DCAU Batman had ever tangled with. Before this episode, most of his villains had either been mobsters, supervillains in costumes, or beings who had been granted superhuman strength or abilities as a result of science (Clayface, Anthony Romulus, Tygrus, Man-Bat, etc.).
  • Save the Villain: Batman saves Ra's from having his life drained by Thoth, and then saves Ubu's life from the crumbling mausoleum.
  • Secret Underground Passage: When Ra's, Batman, and everyone else reach Thoth's tomb, Ra's opens up her sarcophagus only to find nothing but scrolls so old that they turn to dust at a mere touch. While frustrated, his hand then brushes against a decoration on the sarcophagus, which causes it to move aside and reveal Thoth in her pool of slime, surrounded by the skeletons of past victims.
  • Thicker Than Water: While it pains her to betray Bruce, Talia ultimately sides with her father in the end over having to face the idea of him being imprisoned.
  • Treasure Map: The whole episode starts out with half of an ancient Egyptian scroll stolen from a museum exhibit by Ubu and Ra's. It turns out Ra's has the other half, which leads to Thoth's tomb when completed.
  • We Will Meet Again: Just when Batman thinks he has Ra's, Talia frees her father, and takes Batman's horse from him at gunpoint, leaving him stranded in the desert. Ra's then says, "Another time, Detective" to Batman as he and Talia leave, and Ubu tosses Batman a canteen before following.
