Recap / The Addams Family S 1 E 7 Halloween With The Addams Family

Go To

As the Addamses prepare for Halloween, a pair of robbers try to hide from the police near their house. Believing the men are trick-or-treating, Gomez invites them inside. The crooks, Marty and Claude, agree in order to hide from the police officers searching for them, but their hideaway turns out to be more than they bargained for.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Death by Materialism: After the crab-bobbing game, Claude tells Marty that they need to leave before they die. Marty refuses, saying that he's not leaving the drawer of money that they saw.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: While they're preparing the punch, Morticia says that Marty reminds her of Rupert Styx, her ex-fiance. Gomez begs her not to mention him again, saying they had an agreement.
  • Nasal Trauma: The Addamses play the bobbing game with a live crab instead of apples. Marty and Claude try to beg out of it, but when a pair of policemen appear at the door, they plunge their heads in to avoid being recognized. When they emerge, the crab has a firm grip on both of their noses.
  • Not a Mask: While hiding in the Addams mansion, Marty and Claude decide to ask Lurch where he got his mask, thinking that it might be useful for future robberies. After pinching it, they realize it's his face.
  • On Second Thought:
    • Marty and Claude don't intend to come inside at first, but then they hear a police siren. They quickly decide to go in and "celebrate" with the family just to have a place to hide.
    • After realizing the Addamses are not in costume for Halloween, the two decide to scram. However, they agree to stay a little longer when they hear another police siren outdoors.
  • The Parody Before Christmas: The Addamses read a poem on Halloween that is clearly a spooky parody of "A Visit from St. Nicholas." For instance, it replaces "house"/"mouse" with "abode"/"toad" and talks about hanging lanterns to guide "Sister Witch" and her team of vampire bats.
  • Prefer Jail to the Protagonist: Downplayed. Crooks Marty and Claude finally race out of the house in panic after spending an evening hiding from the police. In their haste to escape, they get caught by the police.
  • Sacred Hospitality: Gomez thinks the "hide-and-seek" game proposed by Marty and Claude sounds weird. However, Morticia convinces him to go along with it because they're guests.
  • Sticky Fingers: Thing grabs Marty's gun from its holster and replaces it with a banana.
  • Would Rather Suffer: When the Addamses announce they're going to read a poem, Claude whispers to Marty that it would be better for them in jail. Marty hisses at him to be quiet.
