Plot

John confronts Jesse about Riley's death. On the submarine, the mission goes from bad to worse and Jesse finds herself caught between the terrified crew and the inflexible Captain Queeg. Ellison continues his sessions with John Henry.

Tropes

  • Anti-Mutiny: Jesse relieves Queeg of command, and kills him when he refuses to be relieved, because she suspects him of being a traitor to the resistance.
  • Arc Words: For the last few episodes of the series.
    Will you join us?
  • Blind Obedience: Queeg has this for John Connor, and unfortunately expects the crew to have it to him.
  • Breaking Speech: John's whole speech to Jesse in the hotel room, when he reveals that he knows she killed Riley and dismantles her justification for it.
  • Call-Back: Derek tells Jesse about how he killed Andy Goode.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: John Henry confronts Weaver about her willingness to kill humans. It's particularly chilling for their mutual AI lack of overt emotionalism.
  • Convenient Miscarriage: Jessie. Also her Start of Darkness.
  • Cruel Mercy: John lets Jesse live to suffer from her guilt and loneliness. However, Derek may disagree.
  • Fantastic Racism: This episode concentrates on the mutual lack of trust between humans and "turned" Terminators in the future resistance. Also, Weaver's line to John Henry about how humans will always disappoint.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: After proving Cameron innocent and dealing with Jesse, John finally breaks down and grieves for Riley during the episode's closing moments.
    • Jessie breaks into this as Derek confronts her, too.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Naming a Terminator ship captain "Queeg" really was asking for trouble.
  • Origins Episode: Jesse's one continues. It's also possibly one for Weaver.
  • Pool Scene : Jessie swims through the first half of the episode.
  • The Power of Trust : John would not have killed Cameron even if Jessie's plan had worked.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil : Dietze and the other crewmen are about to "check out" Jessie to be sure she's human. His "summary justice" for mutiny is Queeg bashing in his head.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Two, both of which might have been answered had there been a third season:
    • Did Derek actually kill Jesse?
    • Was the liquid metal Terminator on the submarine Weaver?
    • Would Weaver have killed Ellison and Murch, had she not jumped forward in the finale?
  • Shout-Out: To Terminator 2: Judgment Day when the T-1000 on the ship wags their finger at the crew.
  • Took a Level in Badass: John.
If you pretend not to know me, I might shoot you in the head.
  • Trespassing to Talk: Jesse arrives at her hotel room to find John holding a gun on her.
  • Wham Episode: One of the biggest of the series.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"? : Mentioned by Sarah. One of the towns they lived in was full of hippies.
There was only one Sequoia. There were three Sages.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: John Henry discovers "letters of resignation" from several employees who have disappeared, and pre-prepared ones for members of Weaver's team and Ellison.
