Just before the battle to take over the Dai-Gunzan, the combined forces of the newly dubbed Team Dai Gurren celebrate. Simon however is too nervous to party. Yoko comes to him for a talk, which makes him realize that he has a crush on Yoko. But when he sees her and Kamina kissing, he ends up upset.
As Team Dai Gurren attacks by throwing boulders, Lagann lands on top of the Dai-Gunzan. However, Simon is unnerved because of his mixed emotions. Kamina reaches Simon and punches him in order to snap him out of his turmoil, and convinces Simon to believe in himself. No sooner does Kamina return to his Gurren than he has been struck down by Thymilph in his Gunmen Byakou, causing Simon to lose heart. Just when all seems lost, Kamina gets up and again snaps Simon out of his distress. Together they form Gurren Lagann to destroy Byakou with the Giga Drill Break, thus claiming the Dai-Gunzan.
Team Dai Gurren has triumphed . . . but at a heavy cost.
Kamina is dead.
Simon: "That day . . . we all lost something that could never be replaced."
