Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 S 4 E 24 The Tale Of Tiger Claw

Go To

A female mutant fox assassin named Alopex appears and starts causing trouble for Tiger Claw.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Alopex slices off Tiger Claw's right arm at the end of the episode.
  • And Show It to You: Alopex hunts down Tiger Claw wearing a belt fashioned out of his tail, which she cut off years prior.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Casey initially scoffs at the suggestion that he's been cursed, despite all the other strange phenomena he's encountered.
Casey: I don't believe in curses! Sure, ancient Chinese spirits, Dream Beavers, interdimensional aliens... but curses? Puh-lease!
  • Backstab Backfire: Tiger Claw attempts this on Alopex after she doesn't kill him, but she responds by slicing his arm off.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Tiger Claw claims that their life of crime was meant to protect Alopex. It doesn't sound unbelievable, given that being a mutant in a mostly non-mutated world would be problematic, people fearing you, scientists wanting to dissect you, etc. However, Alopex's line about their parents' death makes his claim questionable.
  • Bloodless Carnage: When Tiger Claw's arm is severed.
  • Butt-Monkey: Taken to near-fatal levels when Casey is cut by Alopex's cursed blades.
  • Cain and Abel: Alopex and Tiger Claw are brother and sister who were mutated by the Kraang as children. After escaping back to Earth, they found refuge as circus performers and later as hired guns. Alopex eventually rebelled and cut off Tiger Claw's tail as she escaped. Now they are mortal enemies with deep-seated grudges.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Casey recalls being poisoned by Karai.
    • Raph declares that Alopex is "no Mona Lisa"note .
    • The events of "A Chinatown Ghost Story", and "Dream Beavers" are mentioned by Casey, as are the Kraang.
  • Don't Make Me Destroy You: When she has Tiger Claw at her mercy, Alopex ultimately decides not to kill him because he's the only family she has left, warning him to walk away from his current path or he won't be so lucky next time. Immediately afterwards, Tiger Claw tries to shoot Alopex In the Back... only for Alopex to Flash Step out of the way and lop off his right arm as a warning.
Alopex: Never forget. I could have taken your life.
  • Drunken Boxing: Splinter chugs a gourd of unspecified content in order to showcase this method of fighting to his pupils.
  • Family-Unfriendly Violence: A flashback shows Alopex cutting off Tiger Claw's tail and the episode ends with her cutting off one of his arms.
  • High on Catnip: When Tiger Claw senses Alopex and freezes up, Bebop jokes that he's been using catnip. Given that Tiger Claw hid a plant behind his back when Bebop and Rocksteady came into his room, it's... not implausible.
  • In the Back: Tiger Claw tries to do this as Alopex decides to spare him. All he got was a cut off arm for his attempt.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Tiger Claw gains visions of Alopex's POV as she draws near, April gains a premonition of the cursed blades she's after and Alopex herself senses when Tiger Claw is close.
  • No More for Me: After a hippie sees Michelangelo, he tosses away a can of spraypaint.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Alopex is an outdated scientific name for the arctic fox. The character's name doesn't make as much sense when she's retooled as a red fox.
  • The Reveal: Tiger Claw's mutant origins are revealed. A Kraang portal opened up in a playground while he and his sister were kids. They went inside only to be mutated by the Kraang. They eventually escaped back to Earth and joined a circus, and later became assassins for a crime syndicate. Alopex then cut off Tiger Claw's tail and went separate ways after their fight. Also, Alopex is in fact, Tiger Claw's sister, and Tiger Claw's real name is Takeshi. According to Alopex, Tiger Claw also had a hand in their parents' deaths.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Alopex implies that Tiger Claw killed their parents.
  • Series Continuity Error: In his debut episode, Tiger Claw specifically referred to the one who cut off his tail as a he.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Splinter's "drunk training" with the Turtles at the start of the episode is a likely reference to Jackie Chan's Drunken Master.
    • Raph tells Tiger Claw "Back off, Tony", as a reference to cereal mascot Tony the Tiger.
