Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 S 3 E 19 Turtles In Time

Go To

A Timestress named Renet recruits the Turtles to travel across time and space with her to defeat the evil Savanti Romero, who's bent on forcefully taking control of Lord Simultaneous' Time Scepter.

  • Adaptational Modesty: Renet's general design is still the same, but most areas where skin was exposed in previous iterations are covered up, most likely due to her lowered age.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: Zigzagged; Renet and Lord Simultaneous use odd terms like "cold" in place of "cool".
  • The Archmage: Savanti gets the hang of the Time Scepter pretty quickly.
  • Artistic License – History: The "980 A.D." of this episode features knights wearing armour that wouldn't be invented for at least another three-hundred years.
  • Breath Weapon: Savanti can breathe fire.
  • Cathedral Climax: Savanti castle. It even has a lot of turning gear during the final fight.
  • Cliffhanger: Renet is unable to return the Turtles to their time and they are instead sent back in time to Japan, when Hamato Yoshi and Oroku Saki were still friends.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Mikey has Renet bestow upon the Turtles their LARP gear from "Mazes and Mutants".
    • The previous episode's events are referenced in the opening scene.
  • Deadpan Snarker: When the Turtles are attempting to attack Savanti in his throne room.
Savanti: Come on, attack! I haven't got all the time in the world! Most of it, yes.
  • Gaussian Girl: Renet gets this treatment the first time Mikey sees her.
  • Hartman Hips: Renet averts this and generally has a slightly fuller, more realistic build than past female characters in the show.
  • "Hell, Yes!" Moment: When Renet assures them that they'll be famous heroes remembered throughout history, Leo, Donnie, and Raph excitedly high-three.
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs: On one occasion, Renet uses "drakking" as an adjective.
  • Hope Spot: Just as the Turtles are about to return home, a sudden bout of interference separates them from Renet and sends them into another time period.
  • Large Ham: Savanti Romero has inherited this trait from his previous incarnation; notably his evil laugh is highly similar to the one employed by David Zen Mansley.
  • Little "No": Renet when the Turtles get separated from her and sent to another time.
  • Long Bus Trip: Savanti is sent somewhere in time at the episode's end.
  • Love Interest: Following in the footsteps of April and Karai, Renet is a love interest for Mikey.
  • Medieval European Fantasy: The main plot of the episode.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • A lot of the lore regarding Savanti, Renet, and Lord Simultaneous is pretty faithful to its depictions in past incarnations.
    • The title is a reference to the to the second arcade, as well as the Super Nintendo game and the four-part story arc in the IDW comics.
    • Renet tried to send Savanti 100 million years into Earth's past; a fate that always has befallen Savanti in his past incarnations. It's possible this is where Donnie has him sent at the episode's end.
  • Post-Kiss Catatonia: Renet gives Mikey a kiss on the cheek. He spins around and then faints, smiling while even passed out. It takes a moment for him to get back up.
  • Red Herring: Renet says she sent Savanti 100 million years into the past, but it turns out the episode is set in Medieval Times, not during the Mesozoic era.
  • Ship Tease: Mikey immediately falls for Renet. He's thrilled when she calls him "the cute one" of the group.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Tempting Fate: Mikey starts the episode by poking fun at Leo and Donnie for their crushes, followed by declaring that all he cares about is "ninja-ing" and that he's never going to have a crush on a girl. Not two minutes later, Renet appears in the sky over their rooftop, Mikey breaks her fall, and he's instantly smitten with her.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Leo's reaction to being trapped in a different time period and surrounded by ninjas that just fired arrows at them.
  • Villain of the Week: Savanti, though considering his history of coming back again and again in past stories, he'll likely be back.
  • Voice of the Legion: Lord Simultaneous has this, and Savanti as well when he gets a hold of the Time Scepter.
  • Younger and Hipper: Renet is usually depicted as a grown woman; here, she's aged down to be about the Turtles' age physically so she can be Mikey's Love Interest.
