Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003 S 3 E 13 The Christmas Aliens

Go To

It's Christmas, and The Turtles are having a big party at their Lair for all their friends. In the meantime, Michelangelo is trying to stop a gang of bandits above ground.

First appearance of Klunk

This episode provides examples of

  • Adaptational Late Appearance: Klunk was originally introduced before the events of the Shredder's resurrection while the Turtles were still living with April.
  • Adaptational Location Change: The B plot takes place at the Turtles' lair, instead of April's apartment.
  • Adaptation Amalgamation: The A plot is the Animated Adaptation of the Michaelangelo #1 Micro Series. of the same name. The B plot borrows elements from the Leonardo #1 Micro Series, which was also set during Christmas and had its own animated adaptation, but that episode was not set during Christmas. The B plot also works Leo into it since he was actually absent from the Christmas decoration scenes of Leonardo #1 Micro Series.
  • A Day in the Limelight: This episode, like the comic issue of the same name, is a Michelangelo focused episode.
  • An Ass-Kicking Christmas: Mike takes on some Purple Dragon goons trying to steal a truck full of "Lil' Orphan Alien" dolls that are supposed to go to an orphanage resulting in an action packed adventure.
  • Christmas Episode: Adapted from the Vol. 1 comic of the same name.
  • Continuity Nod: Silver Sentry refers to Mike as his sidekick.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Michelangelo adopts a stray cat he found in the snow and names the cat "Klunk."
  • Lighter and Softer: Fitting for a Christmas Episode, this is one of the most lighthearted and heartwarming episodes of the series.
  • Not So Above It All: April has moments where she sinks down to the Turtles' level of silliness. An example occurs in this episode where she sticks a spoon on her nose and grins stupidly.
  • Shout-Out: The Purple Dragons are trying to steal supplies of Little Orphan Alien toys.
  • Spared By Adaptation: In the comic, Klunk didn't survive. Mikey ended up taking care of another cat who was pregnant with Klunk's babies and keeping one of the kittens, who he named Klunk as well. Though this happened much later in the comics, not in the Michelangelo micro issue. Although what exactly happened to Klunk post season 5 is unknown, so it is possible that Klunk may have passed on before the events of Fast Forward.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Usagi and Leo gift each other swords. Leo is excited to receive his while Usagi is less excited.
  • Throwing the Fight: Silver Sentry has arm-wrestling contests with the other guys- and wins every time. When April steps up, she wins, shocking everyone. It's revealed soon after that she bribed the Sentry to take a dive with cookies.
  • Walking Away Shot: With Mikey going back into the sewer and into the lair.
  • What Would X Do?: Happens twice.
    • When Mike gets into the stolen truck a hot rod full of Purple Dragons races towards him.
Mike: Whoa! What would Raph do in a situation like this, Klunk?
    • Moments later he decides he should do what James Bond would do.
  • Under the Mistletoe: With Casey and April — Casey tries getting April to kiss him by having Raph and Angel put mistletoe up on a pulley and line so it would follow them across the room. During Casey's first attempt, April slapped him across the face with the mistletoe, but at the end of the episode, when Casey was standing under one at an orphanage he and the others were at, April walks up to him and casually plants a kiss on his cheek.
  • X-Ray Vision: Silver Sentry mentions having X-Ray vision as part for his power set.
Casey: (Escorting a group of blindfolded guests into the lair) Sorry about the blindfolds, folks. Matters of security and all that jazz.
Silver Sentry: You know, I can see through this blindfold with my X-Ray vision, right?
Raph: Just play along, will you? It's for Master Splinter. He's got this thing about letting people know where we live.
