Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) S06E01 "Rock Around The Block"

Go To

Krang sends General Traag to New York as a distraction while he and Shredder work on their newest plan to free the Technodrome from its icy prison.

Tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: This is one of the rare episodes to bring General Traag to the forefront, as well as one of the only ones where he directly confronts the Turtles.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Krang gives Traag a device called a rockalyzer ray that allows him to control all types of stoney mineral, including bricks and asphalt. Traag eventually masters it to the point that he's able to create a giant Golem-like monster.
  • Kill Sat: Shredder and Krang's scheme is to take control of one and use its laser to carve the Technodrome out of its icy prison. It works, but thanks Bebop and Rocksteady, it also ends up creating a giant hole that the Technodrome falls into, causing it to get stuck on the ocean floor.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: At the end of the episode, Donatello comments that, after fighting Traag's rock monsters, Wu-wi is "better than betting your head against a stone wall". In response, Raphael hits him in the face with a pizza.
Raphael: Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: The Turtles in this episode win by literally sitting down and doing nothing, relying on Bebop and Rocksteady's incompetence to save the day.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Krang and Shredder's reaction when the Technodrome goes from being trapped in the arctic to being stuck at the bottom of the ocean.
  • Ridiculous Procrastinator: Vernon practices what he likes to call "Transcendental Procrastination." It even comes with an instructional video-tape.
April: [Looks at the audience] I think Vernon finally found something he's good at.
  • Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing: This is the concept of Wu-Wi, the state of being Splinter teaches the Turtles. There's a Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane feeling to it.
