Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) S03E11 "April's Fool (A.K.A. April Foolish)"

Go To

April gets a great new look so she can cover a masquerade ball at the Malacurian Embassy. Unfortunately, this gets her caught in a case of mistaken identity as she's kidnapped by Shredder, who planned to kidnap the Princess and trade her for the Emperor's Lydium 90 sample to power the Technodrome.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing: Despite Shredder and his goons getting away with the Lydium 90, Donatello reveals that it's useless to them, as it's too unstable for the underground pressure where the Technodrome is. Sure enough, upon it being delivered to Krang, it explodes in his face.
  • Dude Magnet: While April is always this, it's emphasized more here after she dons the princess outfit.
  • He Went That Way:
Head guard: Where is the princess?!
Leonardo: Well guys, we better tell them.
All Turtles: (each pointing a different direction: up, down, left, right) She went that way!
    Head guard: Seize them!
  • Head-Turning Beauty: April fills out her fairytale princess costume very nicely and gets approving glances from the Turtles.
  • Ironic Echo: When Shredder chides Krang for mistakenly sending the module into the museum rather than beside it, Krang retorts "So sue me". When the Lydium 90 explodes and Krang blames Shredder for nearly being blown to bits, Shredder mockingly says "So sue me!".
  • Hostage For Macguffin: Krang's plan was to have Shredder kidnap the princess and ransom her for the Lydium 90 sample. He ends up kidnapping April O'Neil by mistake, but since she looks exactly like the princess, the exchange still works.
  • Meaningless Villain Victory: Shredder gets away with the Lydium 90, only for it to explode due to the high pressure underground from where the Technodrome is.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: While out on the town, the Princess caught the news reporting about her being kidnapped. She realized her dad must be very worried and returned to the emissary.
  • Oh, Crap!: The villains' reaction when the Lydium 90 fragment is about to go critical.
Krang: (Seeing it glowing brightly) What's going on?
Shredder: (Nervously) I don't know, but I'm not waiting to find out!
(He, Rocksteady, and Bebop run for it, leaving the Lydium 90 to explode in Krang's face)
  • Prince and Pauper: The Princess and April, respectively. Even Shredder mistakes April for the Princess.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: When she's dressed in her ballgown, April stuns the Turtles and Splinter by how elegant she looks.
  • Take Cover!: When the Lydium 90 is about to blow, Shredder, Bebop, and Rocksteady wisely duck behind a desk.
  • You Fool!: Shredder actually manages to hit Krang with this. He tells Krang to send up a transport module alongside a museum. Krang sends inside the museum instead, causing Shredder to yell this at Krang.
