Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) S03E08 "The Fifth Turtle"

Go To

A precocious kid wants to be a crime fighting ninja turtle just like the guys, so he gets himself involved in a fight against the Shredder.

Tropes:

  • Adorably Precocious Child: Zach is an adolescent kid who wants to be a Ninja Turtles just like the others... except he's just a kid with no fighting experience.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Zach's brother doesn't believe him about the ninja turtles, despite their existence (along with all of the other weird stuff that's been happening for a season and a half) being public knowledge at this point.
  • Big Brother Bully: Zach's brother takes every opportunity to mock him for his ambitions.
  • Clothes-Eating Wager: Walt, Zach's older brother, says this regarding Zach's turtle costume if he can prove the Ninja Turtles exist. When Zach does prove it at the end, he jokingly holds Walt to his word.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Channel 6 News hears reports of a break-in involving a warthog and a rhino, Irma theorizes that "they had a garage sale at the zoo". April, on the other hand, knows better.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: The way Shredder and Krang bicker in this episode sounds like angry parents.
Shredder: Why is it whenever they do something wrong, they're my stupid mutants?
  • The Millstone: Zach is the turtle's biggest fan, but he has no fighting experience and all he ever does is make things worse.
  • Not Me This Time: When the Turtles discover a sticky substance underneath their van, they immediately to their attention to Michelangelo, who protests that he "hasn't sneaked pizza in the van" for a whole month. It turns out that the stuff is actually an ultraviolet paint used by Zach so he could track their footprints to their lair.
  • Police Are Useless: In an attempt to locate Zach's home, Shredder calls the police department and tells them that he found Zach's lost bicycle and wishes to return it. After reading the license plate, the officer on the line practically gives Shredder the address without so much as verifying his story.
  • Pet the Dog: Splinter praises Zach's ingenuity in finding their lair, though it's mostly meant as a dig towards his sons for being careless.
