Recap / Teen Titans S 3 E 12 Titans East Part One

Go To

Bumblebee: I hate to say it, but Sparky is right. We aren't working like a team.
Cyborg: We are now. Follow my lead!

Cyborg travels across the country to assist in the formation of a new team of Titans on the east coast. The group has trouble working together at first, but they eventually come together under Cyborg's guidance. This leads to the Titans East asking Cyborg to remain as their leader. Before he can give them an answer, however, Brother Blood attacks with an army of Cyclonesnote . Though the team is separated, together they manage to overcome Brother Blood and his Cyclones. Robin calls Cyborg, telling him that the original Titans need him back; but Cyborg refuses, telling Robin that the Titans East need him more.

Tropes:

  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: The Titans East HQ gets invaded by Brother Blood's robot army.
  • As You Know: Beast Boy explains the episode's background early on, including relevant bits from a previous episode, when Cyborg asks frustratedly why he's bothering to drive across the country to help out the Titans East.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Cyborg sings about having weapons in his shoe early in the episode. He later uses one against Brother Blood during their fight.
  • The Chessmaster: Brother Blood.
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: Cyborg sings a personalized version of the theme song, which doubles as an "I Am Great!" Song, in The Teaser.
  • Evil Knockoff: While the Titans managed to steal Cyborg's blueprints back from Brother Blood, he has a photographic memory, allowing him to create the "Cyclones", fully mechanical copies that serve as his new foot soldiers. And while they could overwhelm the Titans East through sheer numbers, they're no match for Cyborg himself, since he knows better than anyone how he works.
  • Foreshadowing: After the Titans East split up, they are all systematically taken down by the Cyclones and captured. When Cyborg wakes up however, they're all fine and shown to have been looking after him. This would normally seem like an Unexplained Recovery or an Offscreen Moment of Awesome... but then Aqualad pulls out a H.I.V.E. Communicator once Cyborg leaves the room, revealing that they didn't escape, they were instead brainwashed by Brother Blood and let go to be his sleeper agents.
  • Leitmotif: The trumpet-like musical sting whenever the Titans East are in action.
  • Malaproper: Starfire, as usual. She says Cyborg's sight makes her eyes sore, and describes his irritable behavior as "lobstery".
  • Mythology Gag:
    • When trying to get Titans East to work together, Cyborg says "Titans, together!" instead of "Titans, go!", "Titans, together" was the catch phrase from the comics.
  • Robotic Reveal: Blood's hooded acolytes appeared to be humans, until Aqualad kicks one of them on his shin. Cue metallic clang, followed by their cloaks getting removed revealing them to be mechanical Cyclones.
  • Team Mom: Bumblebee. Speedy even addresses her as "mom".
    "That's a supercomputer, not a footstool!"
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Most of the Titans East's first battle consists of them trying to take point and accidentally attacking each other in the process. It takes Cyborg deciding to take the leader position for them to become a cohesive team and defeat Steamroller.
  • Twist Ending: The Titans East team is under Brother Blood's control now. This is a two-part episode, after all.
  • Walk on Water: In his fight with Cyborg, Brother Blood casually walks across a pool without breaking the surface of the water — presumably a consequence of Supernatural Martial Arts.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: The Titans East before Cyborg enters the scene.
