Aqualad: (thinking) It's called telepathy. Follow me.
Beast Boy: (mocking) "It's called telepathy".
Aqualad: I Heard That.

After some impossible attacks from an amphibious monster, the Titans go undersea to investigate. They meet up with Aqualad, who explains that a man named Trident is the one attacking the boats. He and Beast Boy team up (to Beast Boy's chagrin) to find his lair, where they trick Trident's many clones into fighting each other.

Tropes:

  • The Ace: Aqualad.
  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: Beast Boy is the only Titan who can breathe underwater and he's got a big head over that fact for their underwater mission, to the other's chagrin.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Beast Boy defeats the Trident clones with one question: "If you're all perfect, which one of you is the best...?"
  • Chick Magnet: Starfire and Raven fall for Aqualad's pretty face
  • Early-Installment Weirdness : The Japanese version of the theme, which usually only plays for truly bizarre episodes, plays in this episode, despite it being a pretty straight forward action-adventure episode. Apparently the decision to use the Japanese theme for the wacky out there episodes wouldn't be decided on until the next time it's used
  • Fatal Flaw: Trident's obsession with seeing himself as perfection. It's something all of his clones have, and something Beast Boy and Aqualad use against them.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Beast Boy and Aqualad. Throughout the episode the former is jealous of the latter, making it difficult for the two to work together and stop Trident, especially since Beast Boy falsely believes Aqualad is trying to his glory. However, once Aqualad explains to Beast Boy that’s not the case, the two are finally able to work together, especially after discovering that Trident has cloned a whole army of himself. At the end of episode the two have a friendly race against each other.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Beast Boy is irrationally hostile to Aqualad for stealing attention by being basically better in every way for the situation.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Beast Boy and Aqualad trick Trident's clones by saying that they can't all be the best Trident, which causes them to fight and destroy each other.
  • Humble Hero: Throughout the episode, Beastboy takes Aqualad for a show-off and attention hog who is doing everything he can to steal his thunder. But at one point, a heated discussion leads to Aqualad having an outburst that, no, he's not doing this for the glory! He just wants to bring Triton to justice with no fanfare!
  • I Work Alone:
    Aqualad: "I usually work alone."
    Beast Boy: "Yeah, me too."
  • Me's a Crowd: Trident's ultimate plan is to make an army of himself. Beast Boy eventually exploits this so clones can fight themselves, since they all can't be superior.
  • Unknown Rival: Beast Boy is hostile to Aqualad for being better than him while Aqualad doesn't care who's better as long as Trident is stopped.
  • This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: The Titans go on a mission that takes them underwater, which is a perfect opportunity to meet Aqualad and be impressed by his effectiveness in such an environment.
