Recap / Teen Titans Go S 5 E 44 The Great Disaster

Go To

Robin has an accident and now believes that Hawkman is his mother.

  • Animate Inanimate Object: Upset over Hawkman showing them up, the Titans decide to go out for some cheesesteak, and bring one to life with Raven's magic and Cyborg's nanobots because they think it'd make a good friend.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • It seems that "The Great Disaster" refers to Robin losing his memory and then fighting against the team, only for the final shot to show that it was actually the cheesesteak self-replicating enough to bury Jump City beneath themselves.
    • When talking about the fight itself, Bumblebee states that Robin couldn't view the rest of the team as fellow superheroes after their battle. It then turns out that, rather than having a negative implication, he saw them as family instead.
  • Complete Immortality: It turns out the living cheesesteak has this: it survives getting squished in a fight against an amnesiac Robin, and when Cyborg takes a bite out afterwards, it instantly regenerates itself. It then generates copies of itself for the other Titans to eat, which leads to the titular Great Disaster with living cheesesteaks completely burying the city.
  • Cranial Eruption: Robin gains a notable large bump on his head each time he suffers a concussion.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The episode begins with the Titans hyping themselves up for a fight against Doomsday, only for Hawkman to swoop in and beat Doomsday up for four straight days while the Titans just watch.
  • Easy Amnesia: Robin gets a concussion while trying to chase down Hawkman and pick a fight as revenge for Hawkman stealing the spotlight in the Doomsday fight, and falls into an egg-shaped urn that lands in Hawkman's nest. When it "hatches", Robin can't remember his past, leading him to believe Hawkman just hatched him. He then gets into a fight with the Titans because they call out to him and he thinks they want to Rob him, only to get another concussion and regain his memories.
  • Framing Device: After Robin states that their fight against Doomsday will be something grand that they can tell their children about, most of the episode is set in the distant future, with Bumblebee telling the story to her grandchildren.
  • Interspecies Romance: Grandma Bumblebee's grandchildren are a girl that looks identical to herself, and a boy with green skin and orange fins.
  • Non Sequitur, *Thud*: After the cheesesteak beats up an amnesiac Robin and restores his memories, he realizes his pre-amnesia errors and says that he doesn't see the team as superheroes, but as...a low interest rate on a new car, right before collapsing on the ground. After he's taken to a hospital to be properly treated for his concussions, he clarified that he meant he sees them as family.
  • Title Drop: Grandma Bumblebee says that the story she's telling her grandchildren is about "The Great Disaster".
