Recap / Teen Titans Go! S 1 E 31 "Staring at the Future"

Go To

Cyborg and Beast Boy have a staring contest over a slice of pizza that lasts for thirty years, bringing them face to face with a future of adulthood and responsibility... and they hate it.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: This is apparently how Beast Boy and Cyborg manage to stare at a pizza slice for 30 years and not only avoid starving to death but also not age at all while three decades pass.
  • Artistic License – Biology: In reality, going without blinking for just 12 hours would cause permanent eye damage and 3 days without blinking would cause permanent blindness.
  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: In 30 years time, Raven defeats Trigon and is reborn as pure energy. Oh, and she controls the whole universe.
  • Babies Ever After: Robin and Batgirl. This didn't sit well with Beast Boy and Cyborg.
  • Berserk Button: Beast Boy and Cyborg hate the word "responsibility".
  • Downer Ending: After returning to the present, Beast Boy and Cyborg decide to simply divide the pizza slice between them, which leads to a Bad Future where humanity is conquered by the Robot Overlords. Not that Beast Boy and Cyborg care anyways.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Somehow, none of the pizzeria staff or customers notice Beast Boy and Cyborg standing there while they're staring at the pizza slice.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Beast Boy and Cyborg sharing a pizza is all it takes for humanity to be enslaved by a robot civilization 30 years later, but at least they don't have to deal with responsibility anymore.
  • Jerkass: Beast Boy and Cyborg. They play rodeo and crash through all of the Titans' rooms and trample on them, not caring about the damage they've caused. And they refuse to take responsibility for their actions.
  • Married in the Future: Robin (now Nightwing) and Batgirl are this.
  • Mythology Gag: Beast Boy and Cyborg go to the future and meet Robin - who isn't just Nightwing but married to Batgirl instead of Starfire. In the comics, Starfire and Dick Grayson eventually break up. Afterwards, Barbara Gordon (the Batgirl who appears in the show) has been his primary love interest before and ever since.
  • Non Sequitur Causality: Beast Boy and Cyborg's decision to share the last pizza slice somehow results in Earth being conquered by robots in the new future.
  • Running Gag:
    • Beast Boy and Cyborg having a long staring contest.
    • Beast Boy and Cyborg hating the word "responsibility".
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Cyborg and Beast Boy dash away after hearing the terrifying word "responsibility".
  • Way Past the Expiration Date: After winning the staring contest, Cyborg tries to eat the pizza slice, only to find that it's gone rotten. It's only when they leave the restaurant that they realize that 30 years have passed while they were staring at the pizza.
