Recap / Team 8 Chapter 9 "Returning to Konoha"

Go To

"My dissatisfaction with the situation stems from the attitude of the elders toward my team mate, a shinobi who had borne a large burden, practically since birth, with a dignity and aplomb that leaves me embarrassingly humbled. Despite this, the elders of our clan openly disparaged him throughout his childhood. This attitude, promulgated through the elder generation, infected the thinking of myself and others of our cohort, to the extent that their distaste for Uzumaki Naruto was communicated, in full, to practically everyone he came into contact with. I now find myself questioning the judgment, rationality, and fitness to lead of the elders, as well as the rest of their generation. I find myself questioning the Aburame clan's commitment to logic, and whether I still have a place within it."
Shino Aburame, to his father

Short version

The Hokage is pleased to learn that Naruto's teammates are still accepting of him after learning about the Kyuubi, and rewards them with the bounty payments for the missing-nin, but is disturbed to hear about the psychologist's treachery, and promises action. Hinata joins Naruto's training with Lee, whom Naruto also tells about the Kyuubi. Shino confronts his father about their clan's treatment of Naruto, intending to also speak to the clan elders.

Longer version

As Team 8 returns to Konoha, Kurenai reminisces on the tragedy of her team, and notes Naruto's relief at Hinata & Shino's acceptance. Shino is noticeably aggravated at Naruto's treatment. Naruto notices Hinata's dread at returning. This, combined with Hinata's cold treatment by her family at the campsite and other signs make Naruto realize how terrible her family is. He's unsure what to do.

The team reports to the Hokage, who thanks them for rescuing Konohamaru. Kurenai reveals the Earth shinobi's alarm at Naruto's resemblance to the Fourth, and also details the battle with the kidnappers. Hiruzen learns that Hinata and Shino know the truth of the Nine-Tails. Upon learning of Naruto's psychological sabotage, he vows to have the doctor responsible interrogated by Ibiki. The team is paid for both the mission fee and the bounty for the missing nin. The Third dismisses them and reflects on the incredible unity of the team.

Kurenai takes her team for one more task. Naruto ponders her silence on her old team, and also how much he fears for his teammates. He notes to Hinata that they should increase their weights. When she takes it as disapproval, he clarifies it as a compliment, to her surprise and joy.

Kurenai leads them to Moritake's to discuss the mission, just as her sensei used to. When Naruto asks about him, she starts to describe Kobaru.

As the team leaves, Naruto vows to continue his training with Guy and Lee. He invites Hinata to attend the training as well; she hesitantly accepts. They decide to meet early next morning at Ichiraku's. Hinata returns home, but realizes she doesn't want to be there.

In the morning, Naruto brings Hinata with him to Might Guy's training, who happily welcomes her. After Naruto and Rock Lee spar, Lee tests the Front Lotus on Naruto (with Guy's supervision as to not injure Naruto). Hinata then spars with Lee, and Naruto explains that sparring with Hinata taught him to reopen his chakra points forcefully with surges of chakra. Unfortunately, Lee is unable to replicate this due to his underdeveloped chakra network. Seeing Hinata's distress at this, Naruto changes the subject, and accidentally mentions his incident with Iruka and Mizuki at the academy. He is forced to explain the whole story, revealing the truth of the Nine-Tails to Lee. However, Lee is only supportive, and Guy invites both Naruto and Hinata to a team celebration of Lee's mastery of the Lotus. Naruto and Hinata then spar, wherein Naruto uses a light Shocking Grasp technique that embarassingly causes Hinata's hair to stand on end.

Naruto takes Hinata to Ichiraku's, where they have breakfast. Hinata considers the friendliness of Guy and Lee, and Naruto assures her that they would be happy to continue training with her. Hinata agrees to it.

Shino starts his morning and inspects a colony of winged kikai bugs. Meeting his father, Shino reveals that he knows the truth of the Nine-Tails, and expresses his extreme distaste for how Naruto has been treated, along with his disillusionment with the elders of the village and the Aburame clan. Shino vows to discuss the matter with the Aburame elders.

Tropes:

  • Broken Pedestal: After learning of how (and why) Naruto was treated by the village at large, Shino notes that he is "being forced to re-evaluate his assessments of a large number of parties," which includes a good number of the Aburame elders.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Hiruzen feels a good deal of regret for many of his decisions, including how things turned out for Naruto.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: As in canon, Guy tells Lee the Lotus is only for serious circumstances.
  • Harmless Electrocution: While sparring with Hinata, Naruto uses a tamed Shocking Grasp to score a hit without injuring. Embarrassingly for both of them, it causes Hinata's hair to stand on end.
  • Home Sweet Home: Inverted; Hinata realizes "home" isn't where she belongs.
  • Large and in Charge: Kurenai describes her former jonin sensei Kobaru as being very tall and stocky, a head higher than Asuma Sarutobi.
  • Not So Stoic: For an Aburame, Shino is noted to be livid at Naruto's treatment.
  • Power Perversion Potential: Referenced, but also defied; it turns out Naruto regrets his "Sexy no jutsu."
  • Stepford Smiler: Hinata realizes that Naruto occasionally dons a fake brave face, and distinguishes it from his genuine smiles.
