Recap / Tale Spin Bringing Down Babyface

Go To

The forty-seventh episode of TaleSpin.

Baloo is assigned to transport Babyface Halfnelson, a notorious criminal to Cape Suzette for a trial. When Babyface manages to trick Baloo into thinking that he's really Officer Malarkey, the real Malarkey is convinced that Baloo helped free Babyface. Now, Baloo has to find Babyface and turn him in to clear his name.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Absurdly Spacious Sewer: The sewer in this episode is (just barely) big enough for Baloo to fly the Sea Duck through.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: After Baloo and Babyface Halfnelson escape from the police, Officer Malarkey calls for backup, telling them, "Suspects are armed, dangerous, and wearing festive party hats."
  • Ash Face: Baloo and Officer Malarkey both end up covered in soot after Babyface's hideout gets blown up.
  • Cigar Chomper: Baloo's Pretty Boy Lloyd disguise has him with a cigar dangling from his mouth. The cigar gets attached to the false mustache at one point, exposing Baloo's disguise. Baloo tries to pass this off by saying he's so tough that his mustache is scared.
  • Clear My Name: When Baloo is accused of working for Babyface, he has to turn Babyface to the police to prove that he (Baloo) isn't the criminal type.
  • Gilligan Cut: After Kit finds Baloo's parking tickets, Baloo assures him that he never breaks any big laws, like bank robberies, high speed chases, and bombings, and that he'd never catch him rubbing elbows with gangsters. Cut to Baloo being assigned to escort Babyface Halfnelson.
  • Kitchen Sink Included: Baloo, Kit, and Rebecca are on the run from the law and are being chased through the sewers. The police try to stop them by stuffing items from stop signs and lights to a tree down the manholes. Baloo comments that the police used everything but the kitchen sink. They then dodge a kitchen sink, after which, Rebecca tells Baloo not to give them any more ideas. Baloo then comments that they didn't use a bathtub, and a bathtub falls on the Sea Duck. After which, Rebecca tells Baloo to be quiet.
  • Look Behind You: When Babyface and his gang are about to shoot at Baloo, Baloo asks Babyface "Is that a spot on your shirt?" to distract him. It turns out there really was a spot on Babyface's shirt, giving Baloo enough time to hit him with a trash can and escape.
  • Loophole Abuse: The police try to stop Baloo by sending a stoplight down the sewers. Rebecca tells Baloo to stop, as that's what red lights mean. Baloo tells her that red lights only apply to cars, and they're in a plane.
  • Match in a Bomb Shack: Played With; when Babyface Halfnelson and his mother learn that the police have found their hideout, they fill it with dynamite and set it off before leaving. When Baloo takes a pair of police officers to the hideout, one of them lights a match, only to find out that it's filled with dynamite set to explode. The dynamite explodes with the three still inside the hideout.
  • Mistaken Identity: Babyface disguises himself as Officer Malarkey by painting his prison clothes like Officer Malarkey's suit and painting Malarkey's police suit in black and white stripes. This results in Baloo mistaking Babyface for Malarkey and vice-versa. This is despite the fact that Babyface is a bulldog and Malarkey is a pig. To be fair, Baloo had never met either of them before.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Babyface Halfnelson was named for real-life bank robber George "Babyface" Nelson.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Tiny, the polar bear who is the owner and founder of Tiny's Grill, is huge.
  • Police Pig: Officer Malarkey is an anthropomorphic pig who is also a police officer.
  • Rouge Angles of Satin: Baloo's plan to turn Babyface into the police is putting up a sign that says CAPE SUZETTE NATIONEL BANK at the police station. When Kit asks Baloo if there's two "A"s in "National", Baloo tells him he was in a hurry.
  • Spoof Aesop: At the end of the episode, after his reward money is used to pay off his parking tickets, Baloo tells Kit that from now on, he'll never break another law as long as he lives, no matter how big or small it is. Kit asks him if it's because he's learned that little crimes are real crimes after all, but Baloo tells him "No, because it's too expensive!"
  • Taxman Takes the Winnings: At the end of the episode, Baloo receives a huge cash reward for the capture of Babyface Halfnelson, but then the police immediately takes it back to evenly cover all his unpaid parking tickets he's accumulated.
  • The Trouble with Tickets: Baloo is revealed to have up racked up a large quantity of unpaid tickets for parking violations, which he sees as small crimes not worth being arrested for. When Baloo is tasked with escorting Babyface Halfnelson to a high-security prison, he tries to keep Officer Malarkey from finding out, unaware that Malarkey has been knocked out by Babyface and the two have switched uniforms. At the end of the episode, Baloo is given a huge cash reward for re-capturing Babyface after he escapes, but then Malarkey takes the money back to pay the fines for the parking tickets. It is at this point that Baloo vows never to break another law, no matter how small... because it's too expensive.
