Recap / TPF: Louder and Prouder S2 E4 "A Perfect 10"

Go To

LaCienega's big feet make her a natural talent at gymnastics and she becomes a local sensation. Randall, who used to do gymnastics until he suffered a Career-Ending Injury, has her compete at gymnastic events to qualify for the Olympic team.

Tropes:

  • Acrofatic: In the words of Randall, "Don't let the plus size fool you!"
  • Call-Back: Once again, LaCienega's big feet are a plot point and end up helping her. Just like in "Love Thy Neighbor", she tries to get out of showing her feet, but gets laughed at again by the other students (especially Michael, who made fun of them the very first time), and then discovers they give her an edge in gymnastics much like her swimming.
  • Cat Up a Tree: Somehow, there was a kangaroo named Zapp (actually named JoJo) stuck in a tree that later befriends Oscar.
  • *Crack!* "Oh, My Back!": Randall's back keeps cracking while he attempts to do gymnastics.
  • Epic Fail: LaCienega's first outing has her getting an all zero score. Surprisingly, as she improves her fans rally around the number zero, impressed by the fact that no one has ever gotten all zeroes before.
  • Face Palm: Randall facepalms after LaCienega breaks through the ceiling.
  • Fire-Breathing Diner: Eating one of Oscar's spicy snacks has this effect.
  • Foreshadowing: BeBe's ability to perform acrobatics (including sticking a flawless landing) ends up being an important plot point in a much later episode.
  • Florence Nightingale Effect: It’s revealed that Randall fell in love with Barry after he fell off the bar and the latter picked him up.
  • Groupie Brigade: LaCienega gains a crowd of young fans called "Laci's Posse". They admire the fact that she's gotten all zeroes.
  • Handy Feet: LaCienega's large feet prove super useful for gymnastics, granting her extra grip on the beams, greater stability for jumps and landings and — more bizarrely — spontaneously spinning like helicopter blades to give her extra air time and more graceful landings.
  • Heli-Critter: LaCienega's feet start spinning like helicopter blades whenever she's airborne which give her a massive boost to her leaps, launches and landings. This isn't stylization either, as this is explicitly called attention to in people's praise of her skill.
  • Hold Up Your Score: The judges all give LaCienega scores of 0 because of her texting while doing gymnastics.
  • It's All About Me: Once again, Sunset cares more about her own fulfilment at LaCienega's expense.
  • Kangaroo Pouch Ride: The kangaroo's pouch is somehow big enough to fit Oscar inside it.
  • Never My Fault: Of all people, Sunset engages in this behavior towards Penny for costing her daughter the opportunity of a lifetime.
  • Only Sane Man: Suga Mama is the only person who doesn't get swept up in LaCienga's popularity, and calls out everyone involved at the end for acting ridiculous.
  • Pet the Dog: While Suga Mama does call out LaCienega for letting her fame go to her head, she acknowledges that she's still a kid and doesn't really know any better. Unlike the adults, who should've behaved more responsibly instead of exploiting LaCienega.
  • Queer Colors: Randall's gym suit is coloured like the bi flag.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Suga Mama gives both the teens and adults a scathing one for their unacceptable, immature behavior throughout this episode.
  • Stage Mom: Sunset and Randall both act as this to LaCienga. Sunset wants to experience the fame she never did as a child, while Randall wants to recapture the fame he lost.
