Recap / TPF: Louder and Prouder S1 E2 "Bad Influence(r)"

Go To

Penny decides to become a social media influencer to prove a point. She then lets the attention she gets go to her head.

Tropes:

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: Once Penny gets a taste of power from canceling Makeup Boy with her following, she becomes drunk off it and threatens everyone who crosses her. Makeup Boy, going by his real name Sebastian Boyle after being cancelled, finds a more fulfilling life running a Rescue for Beagles, and says he acted the way he did because he was "seduced by the juice" of being an influencer. Penny having just lost her following realizes the same happened to her.
  • Adam Smith Hates Your Guts: One of the things Penny doesn't like about Makeup Boy is how he constantly shills his products for each of his makeup techniques, which are priced very high. She's especially annoyed by how easily her friends are willing to spend their money on his products anyway or spend twenty dollars just to take a selfie with him.
  • Aesop Amnesia: Penny ends up making the exact same mistake she made in “A Star Is Scorned,” letting fame get to her head and throwing her friends under the bus.
  • Asshole Victim: While Penny did go too far, LaCienega being one of her victims counts since she’s usually rude to people (particularly to Penny herself). She winds up on the receiving end of this trope when Maya gives her a taste of her own medicine.
  • Bad Influencer: It's even the title of this episode. Makeup Boy gives ridiculous makeup tips and charges far too much money for his products. Later on, Penny uses her huge platform to cancel everyone at the slightest provocation.
  • Break the Haughty:
    • Makeup Boy is introduced as an egotistical jerk who insults Penny to her face, but he quickly loses his following after Penny calls him out for his behavior on social media and effectively cancels him. Later on, he admits to Penny that this was something he needed, since he was "seduced by the juice" and let his social media fame go to his head.
    • Penny herself suffers this under the hands of Maya when the latter makes an embarrassing video about Penny so Penny can realize how much of a jerk she’s become.
  • Description Cut: When Penny remarks how Maya is the last person she'd expect to be a fan of Makeup Boy since she doesn't use makeup at all, Maya claims her look is "a process". Cut to her doing nothing but smoothing down one of her eyebrows in the bathroom mirror before heading out.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Oscar should’ve picked a bank not owned by Wizard Kelly for his new money.
  • The Dreaded: Penny has gotten so much power from social media that she can brutally cancel anyone at a whim, and everyone, especially her own friends fear this side of her. Even Wizard Kelly couldn’t hold a candle to that kind of power, that he was desperate enough to pay Oscar to ensure he and his businesses don’t become the next target.
  • Easily Forgiven:
    • After everything, Penny's family don't hold her actions against her and immediately forgive her when she gives an apology. Suga Mama, who got taken away against her will to a fitness camp run by Doctor Payne by Penny, is more vengeful against Oscar for happily going along with it.
    • Penny and Makeup Boy easily forgive each other for their actions against one another.
  • Evil Laugh:
    • Makeup Boy lets out an evil laugh that gradually becomes deeper after he insults Penny when she calls him out for ripping people off.
    • Later on, Penny herself lets out a deep, demonic-sounding laugh when she cancels LaCienega.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: As Oscar was confidently explaining that he put the money he got from Wizard Kelly into a new account at a bank owned by Wizard Kelly, he realized to his shock what he just said.
  • False Teeth Tomfoolery: Penny's first video is of her cleaning Suga Mama's dentures, which have a life of their own and lead Penny into a chase all through the house.
  • Historical Character's Fictional Relative: The Gross Sisters claim that they are related to Snoop Dogg.
  • Jerkass Ball: Penny lets her obsession with her following on social media get to her head, causing her to become a bigger jerk than usual in this episode.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Penny loses her followers on her social media platform after she uses her influence to destroy lives. It's so bad that even her own parents stopped following her.
    • Oscar also gets this for both happily throwing Suga Mama and Puff to be taken by Doctor Payne and cutting a back alley deal with Wizard Kelly over Penny. For the latter, he couldn't hold up his end of the bargain anyway, as he was shown being too intimidated to try to control Penny. He obliviously put the money into a new account at a bank owned by Wizard Kelly, and finds it drained when Penny's status falls through. For the former, Suga Mama and Puff return beefed up and on the warpath towards him.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: "Makeup Boy" is obviously based on the social media influencer James Charles, and the character himself is voiced by influencer and makeup artist Bretman Rock.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • Even though Maya is presented as a standoffish activist that scoffs at superficial trends, she's just as caught up in the hype as everyone else to get a selfie with Makeup Boy. Penny is rather surprised.
    • Penny's become such a menace as an influencer that even Trudy is scared of pissing her off.
  • Older Than They Think: In-universe. Oscar laments the state of the younger generation when he learns about Makeup Boy; Trudy reminds him that they had a gender nonconforming icon of their own generation in Prince.
  • Sexy Shirt Switch: When Penny returns home, Oscar and Trudy are wearing each other's clothes before then hurriedly switching back, implying that they had sex.
  • Take That!: This episode throws shade at cancel culture, showing how destructive and irresponsible it is.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: Suga Mama and Puff come back from Dr. Payne's fitness camp with huge muscular physiques. Naturally, they're back to normal by the next episode.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Makeup Boy, or rather, Sebastian Boyle is introduced as a self-centered Bad Influencer before Penny cancels him. When Penny meets him later in the episode, he's had a significant change in attitude after realizing he let his fame go to his head, running a rescue for dogs who have been used for animal testing and thanking Penny for helping him see the error of his ways.
  • Twinkle Smile: Suga Mama's dentures are so bright that they require sunglasses to see them.
  • Your Head Asplode: Looking at the million-dollar check Penny just got from being an influencer makes Oscar's head shoot out and explode like a firework.
