Go To

The employees at Cloud 9 mourn the loss of fellow employee Myrtle. Jonah is shocked to discover that Myrtle left him $1,000. Feeling guilty about having the money, Jonah gives it to Glenn to use for funeral costs, but learns he’s giving all the money to his pastor (who asserts he can help ensure Myrtle will get into heaven). Meanwhile, Dina reunites with her father, thinking that he has changed, but soon discovers he's still the same guy. Also, Cheyenne ropes Mateo into a pyramid scheme.

Tropes:

  • Apophenia Plot: Glenn becomes convinced that the recently-deceased Myrtle is trying to contact him from beyond the grave because he keeps finding items around the store that are tangentially related to her interests. For example, he finds a Mr. Clean bottle and remarks that Myrtle had a "celebrity crush" on Mr. Clean. He even ends up paying his pastor $1,000 to get her into Heaven after his pastor claims that her "contacting" him is a sign that she's stuck in limbo. The employees try to dissuade his anxieties by rigging the virtual Myrtle greeter to say "Don't worry, I'm in Heaven now," and while he doesn't buy it as a message from Myrtle, he does accept that she's probably in a better place.
  • The Character Died With Her: Myrtle died quietly offscreen because of her actress's death an few months prior.
  • Due to the Dead: Myrtle was post mortem given Employee of the Month after it was learned that, despite working at the store for 25 years, she was never given that honor.
  • Faking the Dead: Dina makes Sandra tell her dad that Dina's dead so that her dad will regret everything he's done to her. Sandra fudges it to say that Dina's just dying. When Dina's dad comes to the store to see Dina, Sandra admits to him that Dina's fine.
  • Moving Beyond Bereavement: Glenn's subplot has him hit the hardest by Myrtle's sudden death, and he assumes everything he sees is a message from her from beyond the grave. He even pays the $1,000 Myrtle left Jonah to his pastor to ensure she gets into heaven. By the end of the episode, he accepts that she's probably in a better place.
  • Only in Florida: Amy remarks that she wants to go to Florida, and Jonah retorts by reminding her that the people in Florida are crazy. Amy explains that she likes it when you put the people aside.
Jonah: [reading a headline] "Florida Man Cuts Nose Off With Samurai Sword."
Amy: We're going to the other coast.
  • Ponzi: Cheyenne's friend Corona ropes her into selling bootleg makeup as part of a multilevel marketing scheme. Mateo joins in out of desperation for a better job. They quit when Mateo points out that they won't actually make a profit for ten years.
