The British Men of Letters step up their plan to eliminate the American hunters, something Sam and Dean learn about along with what's happened to their mother. Meanwhile the balance of power between Crowley and Lucifer changes.

Tropes

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's implied but not confirmed that Crowley Body Surfed into a nearby rat to avoid being killed by Lucifer.
  • Any One Can Die: Some fans were shipping Sam and Eileen, bolstered by the fact that she was a hunter, a Men of Letters legacy, and had been featured in multiple episodes, so it was disappointing when she was killed in the cold opening like a random extra of the week.
  • Ate His Gun: Mary tries to do this to avoid being brainwashed by the BMOL, but Ketch stops her.
  • Bluff the Eavesdropper: When Dean finds the bug under the table, he and Sam use it to lure the BMOL into an ambush.
  • Brainwashed: Mary is brainwashed into being an assassin for the Brits, thanks largely to Lady Toni.
  • Brief Accent Imitation: Lucifer briefly puts on a posh British accent while taunting Crowley.
  • Character Death: Eileen Leahy and Crowley, although the latter may have found an escape hatch.
  • Dirty Coward: Crowley gloats about his superiority over Lucifer, only to begin groveling the moment the tables are turned. And when that doesn't work, he quickly makes a run for it.
  • Downer Ending: Mary's lost almost all of her will, the brothers are sealed into the bunker, Anti-Villain Crowley seems to be dead, and Lucifer runs free.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Crowley starts talking about using Lucifer as a weapon, starting with Dr. Hess. It's then that he finds out Lucifer is the one who controls him now.
  • Guns Akimbo: Ketch wields two guns while he's sealing Sam, Dean, and Toni in the bunker.
  • Hellhound: Ketch uses a hellhound to kill Eileen and we later find out the hellhound was provided by Crowley.
  • Hypocrite: For all their anti-monster rhetoric, it's revealed that the British Men of Letter have a backroom deal with Crowley.
  • I Banged Your Mom: Dean and Sam are not happy to find out Ketch slept with Mary and it was "the best sex he ever had".
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Dean attempts to get through to Mary when she's holding a gun on him and Sam. It doesn't work, although she shows some disturbance in the car with Ketch.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: Finding themselves outnumbered by the BMOL, Sam pretends to surrender, then grabs Toni as a Human Shield, while Dean shoots another mook Offhand Backhand.
  • Kick the Dog: There was absolutely no reason for Toni to tell Sam and Dean that Mary slept with Ketch, other than it seemed to amuse her.
  • Literary Allusion Title: The episode is titled about the film There's Something About Mary.
  • The Purge: The Men of Letters are now actively hunting down and eliminating the American hunters.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: Just before Lucifer tosses Crowley around.
    Lucifer: Eight ball, corner pocket.
  • Reverse the Polarity: Lucifer's helper manages to do this with the spell giving Crowley control of him, now giving Lucifer control of him.
  • Take That!: When Toni is crowing about eliminating the American hunters, she says that they're going to be "repealed and replaced", a term often used by the Republican party to summarize their plan to get rid of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as "Obamacare."
  • That Was Not a Dream: The initial hope that Mary's killing Rick was a bad dream or hallucination is undone by her having a scar on her hand from where he sliced her with a broken bottle.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Ketch leaves Toni behind to die with the Winchesters.
