Sarah and the Cushings prepare for her quinceañera but a shocking revelation about Kyle threatens to derail what should be a happy occasion. As Jordan and General Lane secretly work on training his abilities, Jonathan continues to use x-Kryptonite to even the playing field. Lois continues to investigate Ally, while Clark runs into increasing opposition from Anderson, his DOD liaison, which only worsens when Anderson's team has a disastrous encounter with Bizarro.

Tropes Featured In This Episode:

  • Arc Welding: Ally Allston and Bizarro turn out to be connected.
  • Artifact of Doom: Ally's pendant, which her uncle David says has destroyed generations of their family.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • When Chrissy tells Lois about her experience under the influence of the drugs Ally put in her drink, it looks like Ally may have succeeded in turning Chrissy into one of her minions, but then Chrissy says that although the other world Ally and Lucy were talking about is real, Ally is definitely a dangerous person like Lois thought and has taken the other world over.
    • When Kyle sees Mayor Dean talking to Lana, he suspects him telling her about his affair, which isn't the case. Unfortunately, Sarah did overhear him earlier and tells her mother when the three have a moment alone.
  • Beam-O-War: Clark's Cold Breath and Bizarro's Heat Breath collide. Bizarro comes out on top, but this is mitigated by Clark suffering no harm from the attack.
  • Bizarro Universe: Literally. Bizarro comes from an entire universe of mirror beings, one ruled (and destroyed) by Ally.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Sarah calls out her father over him having a mistress.
  • Connected All Along: The plots concerning Ally and Bizarro are connected as demonstrated in the very first scene, where a young Ally is gifted a pendant similar to the one we've seen with Bizarro. Dr. Faulkner is also an adherent of Ally's and seemingly brought Bizarro over on her behalf. The possible connections between the two are explored throughout the episode, though even by the end not everything is fully clear.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Bizarro is outmatched by Superman in this episode, but the two trade blows for a time and Bizarro even manages to best him in a Beam-O-War of their respective Breath Weapons, followed by freezing him to a wall with cold vision. It's just that Superman, as things stand now, has a Homefield Advantage now that Bizarro has lost the pendant that empowered him previously.
  • Death by Adaptation: Dr. Faulkner is killed by Bizarro here, where her comic counterpart lived on.
  • Easily-Overheard Conversation: Jordan and Sarah learn about Kyle's former mistress Tonya because they happen to be standing nearby when she shows up.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Superman battles Bizarro and sees how their powers contrast (heat vision vs cold vision, frost breath vs fire breath). He realizes, "You're the opposite of me!" and uses X-Kryptonite to weaken his counterpart.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Superman hears Bizarro coming for Ally and uses his superspeed to nudge her out of the way and take the blow.
  • Flashback: In the intro scene to 1979, where young Ally Allston gets her father's inheritance, including the pendant.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Faulkner was the one who led the charge in getting Bizarro freed. It's not surprising he brought an end to her.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Jon learns about their grandfather training Jordan.
    • Kyle's family learns about his cheating.
    • Jordan learns about Jon gaining powers, although not the real reason for it.
  • Jerkass Ball: Jon, constantly picking on his brother throughout the episode, trying to prove himself better. The X-Kryptonite can probably be blamed for this.
  • Karmic Death: Dr. Faulkner gets killed by the same monster she helped bring into this world and sacrificed people to do so.
  • Kryptonite Factor: This Bizarro is weak against X-Kryptonite, not the usual Blue like in the comics. Superman uses this to defeat Bizarro and trap him in Edge's old base. The X-Kryptonite does nothing to Superman, interestingly.
  • Meaningful Rename: The Cushings have decided to go back to their original family name, Cortez. Kyle's father changed it so he could get work in Smallville.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Chrissy refers to a "bizarro" universe.
    • Bizarro's world was also written off as destroyed in the comics pre-Crisis (and only very recently featured back again).
  • Neck Snap: Bizarro continues his neck breaking ways, this time with Dr. Faulkner as the unlucky victim, her head wrenched a full 90 degrees with a look of horror on her face.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Ally had managed to drive a wedge between Lois and Chrissy at the end of the last episode. By drugging Chrissy to have her see the Bizarro Universe, where Ally has taken over everything, not only does Ally mend bridges between them but further convinces Chrissy that she needs to be taken down.
  • Pet the Dog: Bizarro leaves Lois unharmed. Clark theorizes that he might be married to a version of her in his own world.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Sarah's quinceañera dress, appropriately, is a huge, fancy thing that Sarah even lampshades as being excessive for a dress.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Mayor Dean makes a pointed comment about Lana's family being "progressive" for changing their name back from Cushing to Cortez.
  • Real After All: Chrissy forcefully finds out that the world Ally keeps preaching about is indeed real, though it doesn't make her a convert so much as proving that Ally is actually worse for it.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Jon's eyes briefly flash red from heat vision when Jordan presses him on why he's been acting strange. Jon is quick to get Jordan to hide this secret, as his powers come from X-Kryptonite.
  • The Reveal: Ally had traveled to or made contact with another universe where she discovered that she led a cult that successfully took over the world, using the same pendant Bizarro had. As well, Bizarro reveals that if Ally isn't stopped, she'll destroy this world, too.
  • Rite of Passage: Part of the episode revolves around Sarah's quinceañera.
  • Save the Villain: Lois and Superman save Ally from Bizarro. The latter later accuses Superman of saving a woman who will bring death and destruction to his world and family, just as she did to his.
  • Saying Too Much: As Tonya tells Kyle, when he called things off between them she confessed everything about the affair to a friend of hers who comforted her, and now she's afraid her friend has made a deal to tell Mayor Dean in exchange for money.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: While Sarah already looked attractive before, everyone notes how absolutely stunning she looks in her dress.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The episode's title is a shoutout to the Neil Diamond song of the same name.
    • Kyle says that he learned his dance moves from Patrick Swayze.
    • Kyle also jokingly calls Jordan "Rico Suave".
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: When Jon manifests heat vision, Jordan assumes his natural Kryptonian powers have finally come in and is happy for him. Jon lies and confirms his assumption, but asks him not to tell their parents yet since the powers are new to him and Clark will take him off the football team like he did Jordan.
  • Survivor's Guilt: Tag Harris has it, being the Sole Survivor of his team.
  • Take Over the World: What Ally seemingly did in the Bizarro World.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Ally drugs Chrissy's tea to make her experience the other world, using her pendant to facilitate the journey. Chrissy does indeed see the Bizarro Universe, but her experience only shows her that Ally is genuinely dangerous.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Jon has become progressively more irritable with repeated use of X-Kryptonite, though it's not clear if this is an effect of the drug itself or simply Jon enjoying having powers a bit too much.
  • Translator Microbes: Lara is able to translate Bizarro's speech so he can be understood, though one imagines Sdrawkcab Speech wasn't that difficult to figure out once she realized his nature.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Bizarro intends to kill Ally and anyone associated with her, dismissing their deaths as casualties of war.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Chrissy calls out Lois for telling her only what she thinks she needs to know, and treating her like she works for her rather than with her.
    • Superman calls out Anderson for sending in his team, who were basically kids, instead of contacting him. Anderson shoots back at him, telling him that he should've known that they were after a version of him.
    • Sarah and Lana call out Kyle for having an affair.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Superman fares far better against Bizarro in this outing, since without his pendant the things that empower Superman in this world weaken Bizarro in turn.
