Recap / Supergirl 2015 S 6 E 17 I Believe In A Thing Called Love

Go To

Lex Luthor returns and wants to help Nyxly gain all the Totems, but her previous experiences with powerful men leave her not trusting him. Meanwhile, Alex is busy trying to set up the perfect dinner on the anniversary of when she first fell in love with Kelly, aiming to officially propose to her. Soon after, everyone discovers the Love Totem, and the race is on to claim it.

Tropes:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Lex towards Nyxly, at first. She dislikes arrogant, narcissistic men who send women to the Phantom Zone (which Lex did to Kara earlier in the season), because they remind her of her father.
  • All for Nothing:
    • Lex reveals that the totems cannot be destroyed, only the shells containing their energy, then hands the Hope Totem over to Nyxly, rendering Kara throwing it into the sun into this.
    • Both groups end up this way after the Love Totem is seemingly destroyed, unaware it transferred into Esme, although Lex and now Nyxly is aware that the energy will have gone somewhere else.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: J'onn has to confront his nightmare of losing his Martian family in order to use the Courage Totem.
  • Beam-O-War: Multiple points in this episode, but most obvious when Lex's Kryptonite Beams fight against J'onn's psychic laser beam.
  • Beam Spam: The Superfriends fire a lot of projectiles at Nyxly during their first confrontation this episode.
  • Big "NO!":
    • Brainy reacts this way to Lex's appearance at the Lovers Lane battle.
    • Lex gives off one when Nyxly is about to be overwhelmed by the heroes.
  • The Bus Came Back: Otis returns in this episode.
  • Call-Back:
    • Both Alex and Kelly state that they fell in love with each other when they both said the same name for who is the best movie villain.
    • Alex also makes a reference to her unsuccessful engagement with Maggie Sawyer.
    • Supergirl tells the team that she's consulted with the A.I. hologram of the Kryptonian witch, Vita, whom we saw a few episodes ago in "The Gauntlet." This time the consultation takes place off-screen.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Alex tries to rent out Al's bar in order to throw Kelly a huge dinner and propose, only to find out the bar has been booked already. Later in the episode, Kelly reveals she's the one who booked it for the same reason Alex did.
  • Cut Himself Shaving: When Nyxly asks Mitch how he got hurt (after Lex captured him), he claims he was doing research and a book fell on his face. Twice.
  • Distressed Dude: Mitch gets captured by Lex and is forced to deliver intel to Nyxly.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Lex's reason for helping Nyxly? He's in love with her. He openly admits this came as a shock when he first realized it, as he had long believed that he was incapable of love, and had accepted that he would spend his life alone.
I don't love anybody. In fact, I hate everyone.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: At first, Nyxly wants nothing to do with Lex, saying that she is sick of men who lock women into the Phantom Zone, although it was her enemy Kara that Lex did this to.
  • Flat "What": Otis, when Lex tells him that Nyxly is the love of his life.
  • Get Out!: Nyxly towards Lex... until he points out that they are in his home.
  • Gondor Calls for Aid: After getting over his hesitancy, Brainy makes the decision to contact the Legion of Superheroes in the 31st Century for help in stopping Lex.
  • Heroic BSoD: Brainy falls into one when he realizes Lex is using 31st Century technology, feeling responsible for allowing him access to it in the first place.
  • Immediate Sequel: The episode starts off right after the last one ended.
  • Intrepid Reporter: William meets up with Otis and Andrea even uses her powers to break into Lex's mansion.
  • I Owe You My Life: Nyxly begins to accept Lex around her once he saves her a second time, this time even sacrificing the Love Totem.
  • Living MacGuffin: Esme becomes this at the end of the episode when it's revealed that the Love Totem now resides in her.
  • Lured into a Trap: Nyxly almost gets taken into containment by the Team after being lured into a magical circle that supresses her Totem. Lex rescues her.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: Lex Luthor sports an impeccably tailored suit while carrying out his schemes. Nyxly lampshades it.
  • Milestone Celebration: In-universe, both Alex and Kelly want to propose to each other on the exact date where they first fell in love with each other.
  • Oh, Crap!: Alex's reaction (verbatim) when she reaches into her pocket for the engagement ring she got for Kelly, only to pull out the Love Totem. Cue Nyxly and Lex bursting out of a portal.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The team lampshade something is seriously off when Lex Luthor chose to save Nyxly rather than grab an item of incredible power for himself.
  • The Reveal:
    • Lex reveals that he has been spending most of the season in the 31st Century, falling in love with Nyxly.
    • Otis reveals he is on the Board of Directors for L-Corp. He was assigned there by Lillian.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: All the time that Lex was nowhere to be seen on the show, he had gone to the 31st century, the Legion's timeframe, where he met future Nyxly and they fell in love. In this future, she had gained the AllStone and taken her revenge long ago. However, something about how she mastered the totems was wrong and eventually led to her death, which Lex has come back to prevent by doing it the right way this time.
  • Shout-Out: Alex and Kelly fell in love with each other when they both named Hans Gruber as the best movie villain.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Otis doesn't understand much of what Lex tells him, but asks him why he doesn't just do the same thing again that Nyxly fell in love with him over for.
  • Unholy Matrimony: Lex and Nyxly had this relationship in the future and Lex wants to get it started again in the present. Possibly literally, since Lex says that he and Nyxly got each other matching trackers for "our anniversary", which could mean marriage anniversary or just dating anniversary.
  • With This Ring: Alex is about to propose to Kelly, but her ring turns into the Love Totem right beforehand.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!:
    • Lex stops in mid-stride with a look of disbelief on his face when Otis mentions now being on the L-Corp Board of Directors.
    • Otis is dumbfounded when Lex reveals he's in love with Nyxly.
    Otis: I'm sorry, what?
