Recap / Supergirl (2015) S1E12 "Bizarro"

Go To

Maxwell Lord unleashes his copy of Supergirl, which Cat Grant dubs "Bizarro," to kill Supergirl.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Anti-Villain: Bizarro had absolutely no control over what happened to her, and can only barely comprehend right and wrong while being convinced to do wrong by Lord.
  • Artistic License – Chemistry: The hell is a molecular opposite?
  • Beam-O-War: Supergirl and Bizarro pit their opposite powers against each other three times, first with heat vision vs. freeze vision, and then arctic breath vs. flame breath twice.
  • Breath Weapon: Being equal and opposite to Supergirl, Bizarro can breathe fire as a counterpart to Supergirl's icy breath.
  • Cliffhanger: Supergirl returns home to find a bizarre egg on her table before some tentacled creature (which will quickly be recognized by any Alan Moore fans) leaps at her from the ceiling.
  • Clone by Conversion: Bizarro was created through a combination of genetic splicing and plastic surgery.
  • Downer Ending: By the end of the episode, Bizarro has been returned to her previously comatose state; Maxwell Lord has made threats against Kara, Alex, and Eliza; Kara decides to end a possible romance with Adam before it really starts, and this development leads to the end of her burgeoning friendship with Cat. Then she heads back to her apartment and gets attacked by the Black Mercy...
  • Drowning My Sorrows: James plays this word for word.
James: How do you feel about drowning our sorrows?
  • Evil Counterpart: Deconstructed with Bizarro: she was once an ordinary girl in a coma, and happens to become a part of Lord's experiments. And since she's the only one that survived the procedure, she undergoes further mind conditioning to hate Supergirl because Lord says so.
  • Eye Beams: Bizarro's purplish "freeze vision" is the opposite of Kara's blue heat vision.
  • Hulk Speak: Bizarro is only capable of forming a sentence with less than five words at a time.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Winn concludes that he and Kara simply aren't meant to be, and decides to encourage Jimmy to make a move on her.
  • The Masquerade Will Kill Your Dating Life: Kara breaks up with Adam after two dates because Supergirl has to continue dealing with threats in National City.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Bizarro's characterization is loosely based on Sterling Gates' Bizarrogirl, incorporating traits such like her and Supergirl being reflections of each other.
    • Prometheus Genetics shares its name with the DC villain Prometheus.
    • Lord says that Kara is different from Superman "when it comes to truth, justice, and the American way."
    • At the end of the episode, Adam is returning to Opal City.
    • As she begins to change, Bizarro's costume changes colors like the third (male) Post-Crisis Bizarro in the comics and in Superman: The Animated Series. And then her S-Shield somehow flips backwards, like so many other incarnations of Bizarro have.
    • The modified kryptonite has a bluish tone; in most continuities, Bizarro's vulnerable to blue kryptonite while being immune to the green variety.
  • No Plans, No Prototype, No Backup: Averted in that it took seven tries for Lord's procedure not to kill the subject.
  • Not Worth Killing: Alex says this to Kara about Lord when he makes a veiled threat about their mother Eliza.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Everyone's a bit floored by Cat being so nice to Kara at the start of the episode.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Lord suggests that Bizarro hurt the ones Supergirl loves after she's been mutated by kryptonite exposure. Bizarro grabs Jimmy, but just holds him hostage rather than killing him.
  • Reverse Polarity: J'onn suggests reversing the ionic charge of green Kryptonite in order to harm Bizarro.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Alex decides to hang the rules and just arrest Lord, telling him that, as a secret organization, the DEO can basically black-bag him and lock him up for eternity with no one able to stop them.
  • Shame If Something Happened: After he's been locked up, Lord mentions Eliza Danvers to Supergirl and the home where she grew up. Supergirl comes close to frying him before Alex talks her down.
  • Take That!: Maxwell Lord makes a not-so subtle jab at the American legal system.
Lord: Holding people indefinitely against their will... Can't get much more American than that.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: J'onn calls out Alex for essentially kidnapping a world-famous billionaire when the DEO is supposed to be a secret organization and they have no legal grounds to arrest him. Alex counters that, given Lord knows Supergirl's secret identity and J'onn's own secret keeping, he should appreciate the lengths she would go to protect their secrets.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Jimmy gives such a speech to Bizarro while being held hostage.
    • Might be subverted, in that he mainly seems to be doing it to distract her while he hits the Super-signal watch. Bizarro is pissed off when she sees what he's doing, meaning he's essentially interrupted his own cooldown hug.
