Recap / Sue Thomas FB Eye S 2 E 6 Breaking Up Is Hard To Do

Go To

The FBI finds itself in a race against time to keep a terrorist cell from spreading bubonic plague at some unspecified gathering within the next few days, with Betty Vanderwylen as their best source.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Accidental Pun: While griping about their lack of progress, Myles says that they "don't have jack." Then he awkwardly lampshades that they do have Jack, but that's not what he meant.
  • Bittersweet Ending: On the good side, the FBI manages to keep the cell from starting a new bubonic plague pandemic and Betty survives and gets a second chance. On the bad side, Betty is mourning her old life, and Asif disappeared from the boat, with no knowing whether he escaped or died in the ocean.
  • Commonality Connection: After Sue arranges for Betty's dog to be brought in, Betty thanks her, saying Sue can't understand what this means to her. Sue, who loves her own dog, says she has an idea.
  • Continuity Nod: Some episodes ago, Bobby mentioned that he likes to do the Chicken Dance at wedding receptions. After everything is over, the office throws a party for Jack and Sue, complete with the Chicken Dance.
  • Coordinated Clothes: One day at the office, Bobby points out that Sue and Jack are dressed essentially the same and teases them about being such a close couple that they coordinate clothes.
  • Double-Meaning Title: The "break-up" of the title happens between two different "couples"; Levi has to say goodbye to Lilly, who is going into witness protection with her mistress, and Sue and Jack come to the end of the marriage they were faking as part of their cover. Sue lampshades both breakups.
  • Fuzz Therapy: When Betty cries because of everything she's been through, Levi puts his head in her lap.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: This part of the episode confirms Sue's belief that Mrs. Vanderwylen knew nothing about her husband's activities. After Sue manages to talk her through her disbelief, Betty tries to help as much as possible. During her stay at the FBI headquarters, she asks if her dog Lilly is all right and is relieved to find out that Sue took her in. Later, Sue arranges for Lucy to bring over Lilly, and Betty happily pets and coos over her.
  • The Plague: Terrorists plan to attack a large gathering by spraying weaponized bubonic plague from ultralight planes, which would cause a major pandemic. The FBI tries to narrow down which it is and warn the people planning them. Some of them listen, but the leader of the Civil Rights parade refuses to budge.
  • Previously on…: An overly-long recap takes up most of the pre-credits segment of the episode.
  • Shout-Out: The episode is named after Neil Sedaka's signature hit.
  • Significant Haircut: While investigating the house, the FBI agents find a pile of ceremonially shaved hair. This confirms their concerns that the terrorists are ready to martyr themselves.
  • Strawman Political: Professor Graham, the leader of the Civil Rights parade, insults Myles and Dmitrius as they warn him and ask him to cancel or postpone the gathering. He claims the alleged terrorist attack couldn't be real, and they're clearly just trying to trample on the people's right to free assembly. The office gripes about needing to protect people like this despite the utter lack of cooperation on their part.
  • Too Good to Be True: Arif Dessa/Joseph Vanderwylen offers a yacht owner a lot of money for his boat so that he can escape across the ocean. When Sue and Jack arrive to ask him questions, he lampshades that he should have known there was something wrong with the situation. Jack comments that such feelings are usually right.
  • Witness Protection: In the end, Betty is put in witness protection. Sue says she doesn't know where they'll send her, but it'll be a place she can make a clean start. However, she does give Betty her phone number.
