The Second World War has begun and several of Sodor's engines have volunteered to assist in evacuating Britain's major cities.
This episode provides examples of:
- An Aesop: Stanley drops one about being a war engine to Gordon: it isn't glamorous or exciting. Although he doesn't brush it off, Gordon still learns it the hard way while evacuating citizens from Hybridge.
- Jerk Ass Has A Point: Gordon admits that Benson may have been right to scold him, Henry and Colin.
- Ship Tease: Subverted with Henry and Alice. James is surprised to learn that Henry and Alice are just friends.
- However, Alice hints at another ship tease with Henry and Emily.
