Recap / Stories Of Sodor S 4 E 18 Storm

Go To

While a vicious storm wrecks the island, Johnny Cuba returns to Sodor. Arthur finds this out and is blackmailed into helping the gangster.

Tropes:

  • Batman Gambit: Joey and the police force pull an elaborate one on Johnny Cuba, by having him highjacking a train of fake explosives.

  • Recycled Plot: To the Tugs episode High Winds.

  • Riddle for the Ages: Just how did Cuba manage to get away with the stuff that he did? This ends up being something of a Spot the Thread moment for Arthur, when he realizes that many of the things that Johnny Cuba is capable of doing (turning around on his own without a turntable, putting coal in his tanks, handling himself without needing a crew) are thoroughly impossible to do by himself. That doesn't even include his ability to seemingly be able to telekinetically move objects. Arthur ends up putting it best:
    Arthur: What are you?

  • Scenery Porn: That one shot of Cuba thundering through the empty Barrow is to die for.

  • Noodle Incident: "Mate, I've taken out an 8F. A relic like you doesn't stand a chance." But this is confusing, as the only living 8F is Peter, and he's in Railgate. It becomes a Resolved Noodle Incident in A Troublesome Engine, where it's revealed that the 8F he "took out" was called Alan, who gets mentioned in Return.

  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Arthur, understandably, is particularly foul tempered in this episode, due to him still not being on good terms with Sir Topham Hat after the previous episode. As well as under stress of Johnny Cuba's threat to use the explosives he's smuggled onto Sodor. As such, he lashes out at others. He's especially huffy towards Bruce, saying to remind him to yell at him later.
