Recap / Static Shock S 3 E 6 Shebang

Go To

A new hero shows up in town, who hates the press and can handle bad guys. As Static grapples with jealousy, and feeling like three's a crowd, Shebang has her own issues.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Always Save the Girl: The reason why Shenice's parents went on the run? They fell in love with her, and wanted to give her a normal life rather than let others clone her.
  • Badass Normal: Subverted. Shenice's parents reveal that she's a genetically engineered metahuman.
  • Being Good Sucks: After what was going to be done to her, Shebang is clearly disappointed that she has to turn in the lead agent in one piece.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: After taking Shebang hostage and identifying her, the agents make the mistake of leaving Static semiconscious. He goes to her parents to get the full story.
  • Cover-Blowing Superpower: Shenice's adopted parents are worried that she will do this, as a civilian and as a hero. They're proven right when the agents going after her DNA figure out who she is when she makes the mistake of dropping some gloves.
  • Creating Life Is Bad: Shenice's parents grew to see her as more than a lab specimen and thus dread the idea of her being used by the agents as a blueprint to mass-produce an army of child soldiers.
  • Designer Baby: Shenice was one, and meant to be a Child Soldier.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Hotstreak sets a movie theater on fire due to the movie they're screening being bad.
  • For Halloween, I Am Going as Myself: Shenice figures that in a city where meta-humans and bang babies roam the streets, her Shebang persona won't stick out too much.
  • The Gadfly: Shebang clearly delights at irritating Static.
  • Genre Blind:
    • Daisy is clueless when Shenice quickly leaves the lunch table after Virgil and Richie do.
    • A new student shows up in town. Also, a new hero is in town and making Static look bad. Still, Static is shocked when he finds out.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: Shenice thinks the city is the perfect place to play hero because there are so many super-powered teenagers running around. Her parents warn her that won't work, and they're quickly proven right.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Shenice actually is very special, but she hates having to act like a shy wallflower ignored by most people when she can do so much more.
  • Only Sane Man: Static is immediately irritated by Shebang, and she gladly tweaks him for the fun of it. Gear, however, is in favor of the three of them teaming up for the good of the city.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Shebang's hood only covers her eyes and hair. Her parents still recognize her.
  • Properly Paranoid: Shenice's parents want her to keep a low profile, in sports and potential superheroic. She points out that she can't spend her whole life hiding her true self. As it turns out, when a secret agency is after you to clone you, then they probably are on the lookout for you and will pick up any trace hint.
  • Rewatch Bonus: Shenice's parents confronting her about being Shebang. The folks warn her that "they" will find out about her, while she insists she wasn't "made" to live a mundane life.
  • Ship Tease: Gear clearly has a crush on She-Bang. He is in awe of her since first meeting her, constantly tries to convince Static to let her join their team, and is flustered when she kisses him goodbye.
  • Wham Line: For Static, when he tells her it's understandable for parents to learn their kids are bang babies, Shenice confides "I wish I were a bang baby."
